Fuel tank modification

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by carllewis1980, Jul 9, 2013.

  1. I have removed my fuel tank to change rubbers. I have also had issues with outlet pipe, there is only a couple of mm and its very had to get a pipe secure onto it.

What's the best way to repair this?

Can I use this item from eBay 170683223497 and drill the old outlet out?

    Thanks in advance

Nasty - I wouldn't. Find a repairer to braize in a new outlet or replace the whole tank, about £100 delivered from a parts importer eg FBI.

  3. Likewise I snapped off the outlet pipe. Fortunately I was taking the tank out at the time. I successfully soldered a new piece of pipe on.

  5. I thought the outlet just bolted to the bottom of the tank. Unless its a fuel injection tank.

  6. That good, I have brought one and will do it that way thanks for advise everyone.

Another thing... When removing the tank one of the straps snapped, at the time I thought I could just buy another one, but they are welded at the back... Any ideas what I can do here?

  7. That's early tanks dude... they changed them in 74/75 to a welded in outlet!! :)

  8. Only weld them back on, I'm afraid. They are very weak.

  9. Ahh, that makes sense then. Mines a 73 tank.

  10. Does anyone know if a 2l petrol tank will fit into a 1.6l bus?
Are they all the same size with just the exit pipe arrangement being different?

  11. They are the same tank, as long as the year brackets match... 68-74 & 75-79

Only difference is if the new tank is a FI tank, then it'll have an extra outlet!!

And the reason you have to year match, is because an early sender won't work with late gauge, and vise versa!! :)

  12. oh bugger!
    I've just bought the tank!!
I know it's not a FI tank as it's only got one exit pipe.
However, I never asked about its year - he just said it would fit in the space and is from a 2l late bay.
    fingers crossed then!
