Gearbox and rear hub woes

Not enjoying the bus at the moment. Three steps forward and two back every time I work on it.

Rebuilt my drive shafts and got ready to fit them this weekend. Found 4 cv joint bolts had been sheered by previous bodger. I wondered why some were missing when I took them off. Drilled and related tapped the one on the gearbox flange but not the 3 on the hub ends (1 on n/s and 2 on o/s ). Spotted one of the four 22mm x M14 bolts on n/s hub was missing and can't seem to get one from the other side to go in.

Gearbox is worrying me. Apart from 5 or 6mm play in n/s drive flange, there is a coating of a resinous substance all over the nose and down the n/s. I think it's a mix of gearbox oil and caked dust that has semi set. Does this sound right? While the engine is out and drive shafts are off, maybe I should have the box out and get it rebuilt. Planning to keep the bus a long time so perhaps should bite the bullet and do it. I've heard of Bears and Cogbox - can anyone recommend either and give me an idea of cost please?

  2. If you're keen, I'd say whip the box out and have it redone. Oil at the front end is just stuff seeping from the nosecone seal - not very dramatic.

I agree Snotty. The play in the driveshaft flange worries me more. Where do you reckon is the best place to take it? Not something I'd do myself.

Used Cogbox about 10 years ago for a rebuild and to date no problems. I have just come back from a 1200 mile round trip from the Alps without any issues.
    Creeping points aside...;)

BTW I never got a receipt for the work done

Thanks for that Nick. Probably should call Cogbox and Bears and see what they both say.

  6. I think 5-6mm play is not unusual considering it's the sum of all the backlash through all the many cogs. I'd be inclined to stick it back and see. I paid £1200 to have my box rebuilt but it is an auto.

  7. @nobody seemed a bit of a gearbox whizz, he may be near you. Or maybe not !!

Thanks Mick. I'll send him a message. I remember reading some of his posts now.

  9. I took a chance on mine, renewed all the seals and painted it. Mine is a 5 rib. All working perfectly once I put the engine in :)

Well that's the box out. Now to give it a bit of a clean before sending it off to Mr nobody. Back of the bus is looking a bit empty now!

A drill, wire brush and a few hours of elbow grease :). Thought it better to do it now with all the dust it creates, before "nobody" strips it for rebuild.

Nice. Are you leaving it as is or painting it? I like the bare look

@snotty may have some gold paint left from his decorating experience :D

  20. it will go dull with time but also my parts washer will matte it a bit. I would suggest clear waxoil to keep corrosion away
