Gearbox oil change, can a 'normal' garage do it?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by paulcalf, Aug 22, 2013.

  1. Is a normal garage (not an air cooled VW specialist garage) capable of changing the gearbox oil on my bus?

    How much oil is needed?

It's a new gearbox so shouldn't have any problems with removing plugs etc.

I'll get them to use EP 80/90 or GL4 Hypoid gearbox oil, rather than synthetic & ask them to remove top plug first before draining old oil.

    Thanks for looking

    Paul

its easy enough to do yourself, unless your bus is super lowered!

  3. I don't have any way of catching & disposing of the old oil. I used to work for a chain of car dealerships, so i was going to get them to do it whilst they fit some new tyres. I just want to check that they can't cock it up as they aren't used to working on classics

  4. Why would you be changing the oil if its a new gearbox?
    :)

  5. Indeed. We're assuming your new box does have oil in it .

  6. id do it meself at least you know then everything is up tight and its full !! only takes 10 mins, empty it into a turkey roasting tray:) can cook ya roasties then. Will save you money too.

Surely you can get hold of a old baking tray or something - It really is a easy job ( so long as you have a allen key that fits the filler).

Do it yourself, just borrow @Lord Congi's frying pan & use that to catch the gearbox oil.

  11. .........because gearbox builder told me to change after 500 miles. I assume small bits of metal will come out in old oil

  12. I may give it a go myself. If i get into difficulty I assume one of you kind chaps will take a trip over to Sheffield to help me out :) I don't think i'll be able to cover your air fare from down under though Terrordales!

  14. Odd. There's a big magnet on the drain plug that catches them.

As above, 15 min job

  15. Perhaps it's over cautious, but i don't want to risk it with a new gearbox, so will just follow the advice given by Bears motorsport and change it.

  16. Or i could fly over with the gear box and at least that way i'd get a holiday out of it!

  17. The drain key costs a few quid from someweher liek Megabug, and I bought a tub something like this on ebay - Yamaha Universal 10l Oil Container QZ41531 which you slide underneath, and then pop the cap on and then you can take to tip and pour out. Perfect for your regular engine oil changes too...... Did my gearbox oil a couple of months ago. Smelly stuff though!

  18. just kampers have a youtube clip... nope its for engines....
