Gearbox Oil Fountain of Goo

  1. Thought id check the GB oil yesterday after id driven around the block.
Parked it level on the road.
Removed the plug on the side.
Was anticipating fresh air but instead a lot (at least a few pints worth) of cold, brown frothy goo came out!

Ive checked the oil loads of times in the 13 years weve had it. The only time it has been out of my hands was when the diesel engine went in.

The only thing that springs to mind is that when the GB was out it was filled to the brim when its on its side. Why some one would do that is beyond me.

    Any other ideas?

  2. If you have driven it around first the gears working normally will have frothed up, airated the oil.
Best checked cold on level ground.

  3. OK. Cheers Tilly. Was surprised at the amount though

  4. 13 years? Ever done an oil change on it?

But yeah, box needs to be cold to do an oil check!!

  5. If it's brown muck, your g/b oil desperately needs changing!

No harm in laying a box on its side. The oil's not going anywhere.

  6. It does it pours out of the little breather hole above the selector shaft
Same thing happens when you stand a box on its end

  7. really needs a change but i only bought a litre.
I was concerned that it had been filled whilst on its side. but if the 1/4mile jaunt around the block froths it up perhaps its to be expected.

  8. How many litres do you need?

  9. 3.5 litres of EP80/90. Fill it up and it'll be good ad new. Box position doesn't make any difference.

    Brown oil is bad.
