Gearbox woes.

  1. Hallo, I've done over 2k miles in Arthur since he's been on the road, and his box has been getting worse recently.

What happens is a bit weird, basically all the gears are perfect and in the right place, first time and on command when the engine and box is cold, however after a few miles and it seems once its warmed up, 1st and 2nd are almost impossible to get into. You can't change
Down into 2nd or 1st for junctions or in traffic, and you literally have to "ram" the stick into 1st to pull away, then go for 3rd as It won't change up into 2nd either.

3rd and 4th are good at all times, and if I leave the van for a couple of hours, the 1st and 2nd come back again and wrk fine for a few hours again.

Any ideas what could be the issue? Syncro's maybe? By the way it doesn't crunch or grind, no noises it just won't go into gear, almost like I'm trying to push the gearstick through a solid piece of something.

I also have really annoying whine I presume from te layshaft bearing, so I'm thinking of removing and stripping it.

Any ideas what I could be looking for, before I go removing engine and box?

    Help!!!!

  2. Clutch cable adjusted properly?

  3. just curious mate ? is everything "standard " on gearchange subsystem ? and ,when changing , wot speed you trying that at ? any work been done by yourself on gear change system|?

  4. Checked the oil level in the box?

Could also be time to change the oil in the box... and like snotty said, check the clutch cable!! :)

  5. The actual gearbox itself will be the last thing to check, as it's least likely to go wrong.

As they ^ said, check clutch cable, see if your front shift bushing is in place (bellypan territory), the shift plate under the gearstick isn't broken, and the rear shift coupler (under the rear beam), and finally box oil,

  6. Thanks everyone. Ill check this.

The rear bush where the rod attached to the box is a brand new item only last year, the front bush was also replaced, the oil level was drained and refilled last year when I put the van on the road but ill check it again, there are no gearbox leaks so I can't imagine its changed.

The plate under the stick was also new when I fitted a trigger shifter setup. Other than this the whole system is standard.

I just really want toget rid of the whine, and if a linkage problem, I can't understand why it's good when cold but useless when hot, this is why it made me think internal? Also even when 1st and 2nd aren't there, reverse is spot on, which again says to me linkage is ok?

  7. Just had this problem i had adjusted my clutch cable when checking it and i had real probs getting
1 and 2 gears turned it back towards n earside and the gears r a dream. In short check the clutch cable .
