I lived in Germany ,great country/lifestyle and it is true they work like their life depended on it ,seriously !I am never surprised when I see/read of their success in Europe.

I work with a load of Germans from senior management to admin level.
I'm fairly sure none of them have any sort of life outside of work!

  3. For sure ,Baysearcher there is lots of truth in what you say, a very focussed people and they expect same of others who reside in their land, in my experience ,if you were prepared to work your socks off to the exclusion of all else you would be well (financially) rewarded.

    Sounds right for Germany, Steveagain!

Rolls Royce in Derby had a huge fatigue test laboratory and planned to completely modernise it, they approached our government for some funding & support as it would create new jobs. Our lot said no, we cant help you. The German government not only paid for them to relocate over there but assisted in modernisation of their test facility in Dahlewitz and also staffing it too. One of our sub contractors has engineers working over there & they love the german' approach, but as Doug says, they don't appear to switch off from work!

  5. I worked in Germany for 18 months and didn't really find them to be workaholics. Very focussed at work, but generally packed in on time and didn't hang about in the office for the sake of it after hours. In general, I find German (and Italian, for that matter) companies are often privately owned and take a pride in their ownership and herritage. Too many smaller companies here are happy to sell up and take the cash rather than carry on with what they are doing. Also, they seem much more willing to invest long term - machinery, product development, apprentices etc. Companies here are unwilling to invest in equipment and training and so productivity suffers. Productivity is what drives real improvement in the standard of living, so it's easy to see why we fall behind.

  7. yeah Owen ,when the bell went re stop work they literally downed tools and bogged off ,yup, when its finish time its finish time . When I was applying for what is perhaps lowish grade/skilled work the company owner would interview me ! when I went to the j/centre Ist to register myself for work I was told "you will not get dole money from us ,we have enough unemployed Germans we do not import them, then I was informed a basic language course would be arranged for me to attend and they would ensure I got a >>working with German speaking people job< so the language course lessons were fresh and practiced by myself <excellent (imo) this country at the dole office?",sign that mate ,see you in 2 weeks"it aint a perfect place (Germany) but I think they picked up the baton that this country dropped a while back

Really? If you look back, the only time this country has been successful is when we are busy stealing from other countries!

  10. It's not stealing when it's you making up the rules ;)

Erm - a tad unfair on the sheer brainpower, optimism and artistry our forebears had.....the UK has supposedly invented approx 54% of all things that can be attributed to a person(s).

Our media spends too much time telling us we are Marmite and we are stupid enough to listen - there are a lot of good people and companies here.

  12. Go on then Zed ,define "stealing" not in the sense of blagging some sods car ,but in the context you used it which I obviously do not understand , please resist the temptation to bring slavery into the exchange ,yes we all know it went on and wrong it was , , as wrong as the "allies " had guys stand on a ship deck to "experience" the Ist atomic blast lots of countries done bad things ,if our "leaders" could stop apologising for past miss deeds and get on with a bit of serious investment re the young of this country , maybe Britain could start to feel good about itself again ?cos right now I feel I am living in a banana republic (England) became Great, a leader, due to (imo) the intellect /foresight of the (past) very clever men and women of this country ,what did this country have in its favour re not being invaded? Money, the cost of mounting an invasion on any big populated island is/was massive, and strategically difficult, that is why we got to ramp about the world enjoying the spoils ,there were them that ,given the folding stuff would have done the same to us, simply put >that is how it was and to an extent ,still is.now thou ,its cyber attacks..Anyone?
