That was the same time as me then! I went from 88 to 91 I think.
I was in the campus down by the Gin factory and lived in Mutley.

  5. HA! my b/f lived in mutley. he was on the oceanography course. hence why i was knocking about in plymouth and ending up going to uni there. not the best way to decide on uni place but i had a ball anyway!

used to drink in the JSV too?

and did you see the Damned play at a dodgy club on union street?

I knew a few guys doing Oceanography, they lived on the street behind ours. We lived on Houndiscombe Road but can't for the life of me remember the other street. I'm sure 2 of the guys I knew were called Jon and Kieron. One of them was a pretty handy sea kayakist who drove a split for a while. Daddy bought one if them a lovely 26' yacht that was mores under the Tamar Bridge.
I can't remember any of the pub names.... Just the place with the mini on the roof

  7. there was a place with a mini on the roof??? i suspect too much of my time there was spent drinking

i can'y remember the street names at all - tbh, can't even remember his flatmates names but i vaguely recall one was called jon or chris vickers. his name was (probably still is!) Matt Roberts.

I only remember the union bar (bloody massive!), James Street Vault (i think b/f lived close to in his second year) and union street feeling v scared. though exeter and exmouth were no better as they used to let 'em out of lympstone on a regular basis

can't believe you were there too! :D

I worked in the union bar, what a dump that was with its fake "La Louvre" roof!
I remember JSV now, it was on the main road from Mutley end down into town?
The bar with the mini on the roof was just the other side of Mutley Plain. Funny little underground bar with a restaurant in the ground floor.

  9. ooh, the mini place sounds vaguely familiar... not sure i could find jsv now, went to plymouth last year for a day but just went around the hoe and barbican. i preferred it before i became touristy and you could get a fishing smock for a few quid from one of the old marine shops :)
when i got to exmouth campus i worked in the union, best way to earn money and get *******ed for free! :D

Funny place Plymouth. The only times I've been back since was working for MOD housing and that only took me to the dumps like Devonport.
I liked it for its position. Close to beaches and the moors etc. Did you ever go up the big free parties on Dartmoor? They were always good for a crack!

  11. no! nobody told me about them! went on a few booze cruises and on a drinking bus - whatever that was :/

We got banned from the buses because we used to get on in town with surfboards and get off at Whitsands. The grannies complained!
I feel robbed: never went on a booze cruise or a booze bus!
    :-(

  13. i went on an open top booze bus dressed in haloween gear - am sure it was an organised thing and not just me *******ed up on the top deck - who knows, either could be viable.

think i used to go to the sailing club too - before it all became poshed up. the green foamy fountain was always good for a giggle in first term. exmouth/exeter campuses were a bit quieter but getting free use of all the water sports kit was a bonus.
i got a call about 10 years ago asking alumni why they chose the uni "because i could see the beach and the sea from campus" was my answer. not sure it was the one they were looking for!

  14. did you play rugby for uni team? only ask cos i shared a flat in exmouth with one of the coaches (and the uni team football manager - it was GREAT in our flat! :D) and after meeting you i thought you reminded me of him a lot.

Nah, no rugby for me I was just a beach bum! Spent as much time living in Fistral Back-Packers as my house!!

I reckon that fountain got bubble bombed just about every weekend. The council must have loved students!!

  16. we used to hitch into cornwall to set up camp and 'revise' most reading weeks. wouldn't mind that life back now, no mortgage, no responsibilities ... but couldn't have afforded a camper then :/

Once we got banned from public transport we bought a succession of crap cars between 4 of us.
Usually cost us about £100 each; they were beauties!
Backpackers used to charge us a fiver a night which was cheaper than camping!

  18. It's still a beaten up old shed! :)
