  1. Knackered piston and rod and barrel, you are going to need a new oil cooler now though anyway as it will be filled with small metal fragments that will not come out until you fit it to your rebuilt engine.

  2. Hole in the piston crown, hope you get it fixed soon.

50-55 mph is kindest to a 30+ year old vehicle

  3. you shouldn't be doing 70 in a 1600 bay!!

Well not for extended periods :p

  4. I was,nt , i was doing 70 in a 1955 stroker

That's more than a little worrying.
    Do you have any guages?

  6. well that's not too bad then :D

You threw me when you sail it wasn't hot, has the white metal of the piston smeared over the rings capturing them allowing the gasses passed??

  12. who built it? did you get the twins set up on a rolling road? did you do a nut tightening session after 500 miles? :)

You must know we like pictures. :)

  14. Yes the rings are just starting to melt into the piston allowing compression through into the case. There was no real differences in temp when it happend

  15. The engine has run fine since 2008 when it was fitted and it was set up on a RR but that was 2 years ago now
Will sort out some pics when i get chance.

I drove an old beetle home for me mate after he had bought it in the early 80s and it did that . When we took it out that little bit of tin under/between the cylinders was missing.

  19. Which would have happened first .Would it have been heat build up that caused the cylinder head to crack between the valves ,
Or the cracked head that caused the heat build up

Every other T1 engine has cracked heads and they don't melt the pistons.

It's quite possible all cylinders were within a whisker of being this hot, but one's bound to fail first.
