Grabby Steering

  1. Anybody experienced steering that grabs and pulls in to the corner? In day to day town driving its not too noticeable but at speed on winding roads its a tad unsettling. Its been through countless MOTs and separately had the various tie rods, drag link and ball joints checked without anything untoward showing up. I also replaced the alloys and low profile tyres to no effect (that was on aesthetic grounds anyway). I bit the bullet and replaced the steering box hoping that it would be the cure but alas no. Could the steering damper be the issue maybe? I hope its not relevant but the suspension was slightly lowered by the previous owner.

Could be damper. I had same trying to fix an early worm and peg box on my 68, I could let go and it would keep going round the corner. It was either that or loose straight ahead. I abandoned the box and converted to a later worm and roller type - so much better it was like fitting power steering! It's not a straight nut and bolt job though.

  3. what's the steering like generally? any play? just because you've replaced the box doesn't necessarily mean its adjusted - @snotty did a write up on here how to adjust the box correctly.

i spent a bunch of time going through my steering last year - new drag link, reconditioned box all made it better but replacing the bushes on the pivot (pin) was the gamechanger.

The caster angle can do strange things like this.

You cannot really adjust it but if you turn the camber nuts to point backwards rather than the usual less than +/- 45 degrees from ahead, the caster angle becomes non- standard..
Wheel camber also affects this too, putting a bias into the steering if it is not set symmetrically.

But if you have sloppy steering, where all ball joints and relay arm bearings are a bit loose, you can have a fair amount of free play, and it all ends up with you turning the wheel to one end of the free play, then something bangs the wheels to the other end of the free play and the bus hurtles off ..
Every moving part in the steering wears out.

It is possible to have the steering so that moving the wheel around straight ahead less than +/- 5mm does actually steer the bus, rather than requiring clown car levels of sawing at the wheel to keep going ahead.

  5. Did you adjust the new steering box after fitting it?

  6. Didn't Grabby Steering..

  7. Thanks for all the advice. Excellent stuff. What's obvious now is that I'm a ***** and I need to put a lot more hours in to sorting it out.

I haven't adjusted the new box. There is just as much play now as there was before ... and that's a lot.
