I know there’s several string pluckers on here, so thought I’d ask, has anyone got an Epiphone Les Paul? And if so, is it any good? Obviously I would like a Gibson, but pennies won’t stretch to that, but I see for £300 on eBay, Epiphone a plenty! Anyone had any experience of one?
I’ve got two Les pauls, an epiphone and a Gibson. My epiphone is about 23 years old so I don’t know what they’re like nowadays but mine is great. The build quality is amazing and the action is probably better than on my gibson. It has the correct set neck and 3 piece mahogany body as my gibson and a lovely flamed top. The only real difference is the tone- it obviously has cheaper pick-ups than genuine gibson ones so that’s where the gibson wins- the difference in tone is like night and day and the tuners on the epiphone are also a bit flimsy but for £300 (assuming the quality is still the same) you can’t go wrong- before I bought my gibson I had considered upgrading the pickups on my epiphone- a couple of hundred quid will get you a good quality high output set. I would probably avoid buying online though- better in-store so you can see how it plays before you buy it.
Mine is an electric acoustic. Gives a lovely sound. I’m also extremely lucky in the fact that I can walk into any guitar shop, pick up a £10,000 guitar, and make it sound just as bad as a £10.00 boot sale one.
Cheers @smeato , that’s exactly what I wanted to hear! I like to tinker and modify my guitars anyway, so will be happy to add beafier pick ups at a later date. My main concern was the build quality, so it’s good to hear that’s ok. Does it stay in tune well?
Yea stays in tune fine- no worse than any of my other guitars. It’s just worth noting that my guitar was built over 20 years ago- build quality nowadays might not be so good although generally there’s so much competition now in the budget guitar market that theres probably no room for shoddy quality. That’s another reason to try before you buy- you can get a good close look and feel of it before you commit. Let us all know what you get when you finally take the plunge.
I noticed some of the ones I was looking at on eBay are 20 years old, so presumably a similar quality to yours. Im not bothered about a new one tbh, as I will no doubt take it apart and tinker with it anyway. I have got a late 60’s Antoria Les Paul clone which is ace, apart from it could do with re fretting at some point.

How’s this for you, Gibson LP Budokan (Ace Frehley / Kiss) Ltd edition https://reverb.com/uk/p/gibson-cust...MIscS88NK6hAMVcZJQBh1aCgklEAQYBSABEgLHB_D_BwE
Thats cheap, some of the more desirable ones (ie the top of the neck signed by Ace) go for ~£25k - £30k
had a rare peruse along Denmark Street last week. £58k telecaster with provenance? FWIW I have a couple of Squires sat alongside a proper fender and the quality is good, but the main issue is the quality of the pickups. This is probably the same for Gibson and Epiphone. You’ll already know that set up is easily ruined on any guitar and a good set up will improve a bad cheap guitar. my mate had an Epiphone Dot… was very nice! To digress, amongst likeminded friends, my brother sent me a video on a 3D printed guitar…. I have a 3D printer, a parts bin, a wandering mind….
