Help....how have a broken my gears??

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by nickdrums, Jul 13, 2013.

  1. Help please....I'm pretty new to the mechanical side of stuff... Just needed to remove my gear stick to put some new floor mats in front footwell of my van, put it back, tightened up the two bolts and now I pretty much can't drive it.

I thought I'd just taken it off and put it back but something has gone wrong clearly...

The gear stick is a Scat aftermarket one if that makes any difference..

Did you take any notice of what gear it was in when you removed it?
It needs to go back in with the shifter in the same position.

  3. Neutral...so if its got moved is it possible to correct it now?

I'd loosen off the 2 bolts and fiddle about with the positioning.
I've found that if you can get 2nd you can normally get the rest.

Did you trap the carpet under the stick? You're meant to cut round it or you alter the dynamics of the stick/shift rod.

Welcome to the gearstick tweaking club.
Line it up so 1st and second are roughly in line with the handbrake when you hold it to the left against the stop. Let go and forward and back should be 3rd and 4th.
Go for a drive with a spanner and eventually you will tweak it right after a few stops.
The hot weather is just right for this frustrating pastime. You will end up incandescent. Please throw the spanner where it doesnt damage the bus or kill a bystander 100 yards away...

Please note that the plate in the bottom of the shifter can wear out making it impossible to set up. Unlike the original where you just buy a new plate the aftermarket shifters need welding new metal bits on. I knackered a gearbox because the shift plate wore out...

I now own a welder and the shifter plate repair has been the second bit of welding i have done on my bus apart from a seat spring.

Something to look at is the rear coupling. The pinchbolt hole should be perpendicular to the screw though the bushes. I've had aftermarket carp that's 15 degrees out.
