help with wheel bearing replacement please

  1. Just started on fitting new wheel bearings on my 72 late bay.

Removed the dust cap, speedo drive and outer taper bearing.

Haynes manual says now merely lift off the hub.

However, the hub is connected to the brake disc, the brake disc will not come off without removing the calliper and the calliper is attached to the flexi hose via a rigid brake hose bendy piece.

Apprehensive about starting to move old rigid brake hose in case an old brittle joint fails unless I really have to.

So, despite what Haynes says, I assume I have to remove the clip holding the brake hose into the bracket (where flexi hose meets rigid hose) then remove the calliper and take the hub off with the disc?
    Ta.

  2. Yeah, pull the clip and wiggle the flexi line out... if the solid line is that brittle it could break, then it needs replacing.... As it could just as easily break while you're driving down the road!! o_O

Nice little video for ref

  3. ^this. Calliper off, hang it up on a bit of stiff wire. No real reason why the solid pipe should break. Check the state of your flexis while you're at it.

Disc off, hub off, strip everything out. Knock out the existing outer races using a drift (VW provided slots in the hub for this very purpose). Knock the new ones in straight. Don't be tempted just to replace the inner races: that's a bodge ;).

Easy job . Caliper bolts done back up (from memory) about 90 lb/ft.
