high lift trolley jack recommendations?

  1. Hi all,

My dad wants to know what I want for my birthday in a couple of weeks and I could do with a high lift trolley jack for the bus.

I bought a new jack a year or so ago which does the job, just, with the aid of a 4 inch piece of wood, but it would be nice to have a jack which will take the bus a bit higher without having to use the wood.

His budget is about £50 (I could put the extra if needs be) so didn't want a 'professional' job as not doing it for a living.

Can anyone recommend such a jack.

3rded, great on the bus, not so great on low cars though as it seems to need a lot of initial pressure when the arm sits in the saddle.

  5. here
    bang on your budget

See if you can up the Ante and get a pair of their H/D axle stands as well...they're great

If this is to leave at home I'd get one with a bigger pad than the ones linked to.

The pad on the Halfords one is scarily small.
But as a jack it works pretty well, and I can get a bit of extra lift just with the jack on the gearbox mount .. so that with the lowered bus on Halfords ramps ( not axle stands as the drive slopes) I can slide the engine under the rear valance.

  8. Do you have blocks of wood where you live?;)

  9. £50 is a bit on the cheap side for a trolley jack... you need something that is a bit more robust for jacking up a camper!!

  10. are you going to tell his Dad he's a cheapskate or should we leave that to @grub

  11. Rubbish

Before i bought that hi lift 4x4 jack from halfords i used a ten quid trolley jack from nettos and a few blocks of wood
Theres a difference between occasional hobby mechanic use and pro every other day use

    Woo... harsh!
I was going to chip in much the same as Paul.
The fact is that safe new jacks start around £70.
Before I used one every day I had exact same sort at home that I paid £20 for at a boot sale, but 5 years of hard labour finished it off so I teated myself to a marginally better one (slightly lighter). It's not the price, it's the type and if you want convenience of a new one delivered to your door, it costs.

  13. Appologies it may have been a bit harsh

Over the years ive been told i need this that and the other before i can even think of attempting anything
Ive taken great pride in getting by and sometimes prospering with less than ideal kit

Vw busses used to be a cheap game and the folk that owned them were very adaptable nowadays it feels like any problem needs enough money slinging at it untill its sticks

    .
I used to jack it up with a bottle jack and a piece of woood, but I wouldn't have got the engine out. £50 for one that's not much use and a worry, or another £20 for one that'll do everything you want safely and with ease? Apologies to Grub's dad's wallet.

  16. Get some axle stands too!

  17. We had no problem when i lifted my bus with mine and used my old cheap one to lower the engine and box

Honestly that halfords one punches above its weight for the price
I think i paid £30 when it was on offer

I also have a 12 volt impact gun that was ten quid from netto about 8 years ago and its still going strong and has performed very well

Buy cheap buy twice doesent excist anymore
I do however give somthing ive bought hell within the first week of buying it so if it fails i can get my money back
I have returned many things over the years but certain tools have suprised me and are still with me

  18. I like the Halfords one, but the Clark one is good as well....Which one's best? There's only one way to find out...
    Let's have a Jack Off....

  19. Well the Clarke one lasted 2 and a half years, I reckon the halfords one is better built. I like it.
