Hot fan housing!!

  1. Hi all,
Went out for a 26 mile jaunt on Sunday and another 20 mile spin tonight and when I got back back home I did the usual thing ... Opened the engine lid and put my hand on top of the fan housing ... It's usually cool but the last twice it's been pretty hot.. Im a bit Worried.... Any ideas ?
    Type 4 engine 2 ltr

  2. What time gap between switching ignition off and opening engine lid?

  3. Mine does the same, I put it down to the lack of non return flaps at the exits of the fan housing, I believe German Supply In Canada have them...

  4. Straight away Foxy.. About 30 seconds.
Not sure about non return flaps...... Not happened before ... Usually it's pretty cool when I do it ?

  5. Guys stop worrying. The temperatures have been high 20's - mid 30's the past week. I left a bottle of Highland spring in the van this week, its fekin boiling water!

Ambient temperatures will be very high so maybe check by a drive in the evening when its cooler but check points and valve gap first if you are worried?
Also check oil level is correct?

What Stan said. It's hot therefore its hot.

mine ran no different than it does on any other day, temp gauge sat as per usual, since restoration of all cooling tin etc it's regulated itself wonderfully, and it was really hot yesterday.

  8. I did think first of all that it could be something to do with the hot weather... But then thought that can't be it... It's air cooled.. Long straight roads plenty of air passing through, not sat in any traffic at all.... Oil level checked before every trip.... Will try an evening jaunt on Thursday when it's cooler.......
    Thanks guys

It's an air cooled thats being cooled by air that's 15 degrees hotter than normal...

  10. ..... I'm not talking a little warmer than usual... I'm talking hot , hot enough to make me worried enough to ask the question... Thanks

Either an oil temp or pressure guage would tell you all you need to know. There is a speed you'll get to above which the cooling can't keep up with the heat generated and it will get hotter and hotter pretty rapidly. Speeds below this will register pretty constant pressure and temp. As the temp rises, the pressure drops, so a pressure guage will show when it's getting hot.

If you were driving like you normally do, check the timing and look for air leaks. Mine's not running any differently in the hot weather. I thrashed 12 miles to work and it was as cool as any other day - I happened to open the lid to attach a charger when I got there. Heat from engine not noticeable at all.

Does it sound hot when you stop - lots of tinkling sounds?

  12. Yes...tinkling sounds,.... Like when the tv has been on for hours and is cooling down when switched off ... That's it

  13. Thanks zed

  14. ^what zed said. I'd check all the usual causes of running hot.

25* outside temp is nothing to an aircooler. Bus-driving Africans would laugh their loincloths off at the Brits idea of "hot weather" :)

We advised Icepug not to worry and just drive it, so he did and it seized.
More caution may be advisable, but once you've checked the checky things and set up the setting up bits, you know you have all the tinware and the fan's not blocked, what else can you do but drive it? :)

They'd have their fleeces on. I had a mate who arrived here from Jamaica in the 60's as a boy in the height of summer and wouldn't take off his duffle coat because it was so cold. "when's summer?" he asked his dad - "This is it son..." "Oh Marmite!"

    Thread highjack alert!

He was a child star in Jamaica, appearing top of the bill with Bob Marley, Toots and all down below. He still has some posters.

    His big hit!

He was about to tour Canada, but his parents wouldn't let him and instead moved to blighty and he ended up being a machinist in Sheffield.
