How do you teach a 76 year old to drive a manual turbo diesel van?

  1. He used to fly helicopters in the Army air corps then later for british airways and has always been a speed demon nutter behind the wheel.

The rev limiter stops you blowing up the engine so there is no real red line. Let him thrash it. He will probably remove both sides of the caravan bit simultaneously either in a carpark or a narrow humpbacked bridge combined with a chicane in some national park.
Or like one bunch we saw with a hired boxy motorhome who wiped out the entrance barrier box and a bollard and a lot of trim off the side of the vehicle entering a carpark at Sandbanks Poole.

  3. That's useful. This one doesn't have that unfortunately. What year is yours Bern?
The Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Relay are all the same vans build at the Sevel factory in Italy.

    Mine's 2015. 130bhp. It's a really nice drive. I like driving it much more than I expected.

My dad used to have a fiat coupe turbo (now mine) he now has a Honda jazz but still pulls out in front of oncoming traffic as though he can whizz away from it. As a very worried passenger I can tell you the Jazz has no acceleration of any note!

  7. This one is a 2008 so the previous model with a lowly 100bhp 2.2.

  8. Why get involved.

You have said he is age 76, new to manual vehicles, its a big heavy box and he has never taken the modern driving test and he is not the sort of person to willingly accept advice or criticism. And he certainly would not like input from you. He knows it all.

He is in the later part of his life and he wants a motorhome, he has the money, so he has bought one.

Let him get on with it and if you are worried about your own safety, then don't go in it.

  12. I call them Honda Jizz, they drive me mad in Dorset, all the oldies have them and can't find second gear, do they have one? some must be limited to 10mph and when they ever go faster, rare, they nearly take you out, i'd say at least 10 have nearly hit me so far, re-test the oldies, I'm getting old, so don't mind if I get a test

  13. I quite fancy a Honda Jazz Turbo II from the 80's but the last one i saw for sale went for £60k.

  16. Maybe. 100bhp, 0-60 in under 9 seconds and top speed of 112mph. Tame by todays standards but in 1982 it was faster than a golf gti or astra gte. :D
