Hydraulic valve lifters

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by SID76, Apr 21, 2013.

  1. Does anyone know if replacing the hydraulic valve lifters on a 2L type 4 is difficult to do with engine in situ? Also, where can I get them from or can they be refurbished?
    Cheers, Derek

  2. It is do-able in situ... But you don't really want to be running new lifters on an old cam....

What's up with yours?? Noisy lifter??

  3. Yeah - had the engine out to replace all the fuel lines and tank filler hoses and when I started it up it's noisy. what would you recommend?

  4. You probably will need to bleed it... which means pulling the noisy one out and stripping it down!!

Firstly what weight oil are you using?

Have you done an oil change recently? hydro lifters are very touchy about dirty oil... I always recommend a engine flush if the oil is black... you don't want to use an oil thicker than 15/40 with the hydro system on these!!

    :)

if the flush and change doesn't sort it, then I can send you over the bleeding process... I scanned it from the bentley manual, so it makes life a little easier :)

...or just run it for longer - it'll probably stop on it's own. Mine used to.

ratwell suggests running with some atf in as engine flush to de varnish the lifters.......

  7. normal engine flush does the job...

you have to remember that a lot of the yanks drive autos, so atf is likely to be sat on the shelf in the garage ;)

  8. It ll take at least 15-20 mins running to stop clattering about

True if the oils too thick stylee (20/50) as it's got to warm up. I made this mistake, fished them all out (because I didn't know which wasn't pumping up), purged them and refitted. It was even worse afterwards! As Paul says, try a thinner oil and save an afternoon's wire fishing.

  11. I have one or two noisy ones b t just ignore it till the engine is warm, I need to put thinner oil in really.

  12. running 20/50??

I have all new followers in mine and its still a bit noisy if left for a while, followers are doable in situ though it can be a bit tricky getting them past the build up in the bores

  15. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions - will start with an engine flush and change to a different oil.
    cheers Derek

  16. Yeah, I know too thick but was all I could get in mineral at the time.
