makes sense, type 2 (2) kombi (3) & 1 for 1971! the rest of the plate will tell you what the original colour will have been, where its destination was etc etc
Welcome to the forum. I’d wager that isn’t a 1971. Loads of them used to get messed with for the tax exempt status.

correct me if am wrong wrong front panel shoud nt have a deformation panel wrong front arches should be flat not flared wrong quarter panel should have sq opening for petrol flap quarter pANELS should be flat with tight lip not flared thems 72 on moon shaped vents not the sq ones ?
look at quarters arches petrol capfront arches etc vents front panel this is 71 wide 5 wheels right panels etc
2 owners ago put a new front panel on with the badge pressing and a deformation panel becaus he wanted to make it look newer apparently. All four wheel arches have been replaced last year by the guy i bout it from. As for the petrol flap... i seen a few 71's with rounds ones @tatton park vw 2 weeks ago. Arches and front panels maybe but why would anyone change the vents? It is what it is anyway so good luck with it!
Interesting! guess the previous owner liked the later look and just replaced damaged/rusted parts as needed with later parts! Good luck with the project bud looks pretty straight. You leaving front clip and filler cap as is??
It's a crossover so late rear lights i guess?late rear vents from factory? (mine has) rear arches from factory? then prob replaced front arches and front clip as needed!
Thanks guys Im going to change the front to the lower indicators. Don't know about the petrol flap as i never knew it was wrong for the year. Main priority is getting the engine in and seeing if its a runner. As its been off the road for at least 12 years. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
if you have a budget lol treble it then double it add a few grand you l be closer that you think lol . have fun doing it most of all ENJOY DOING IT , where all here to help
