Idle and Rough running Driving me mad...

  1. Have swapped the idle solenoid for one I had off a spare carb. I reckon that's made a big difference, will see now how it runs. Have checked all the hoses and even but clips on them now so hopefully no air ingress. Hope this is now the solution at least to the idle issues...Thanks all for your valuable inputs....

  2. Had a dodgy distributor cap a few weeks ago that caused me a huge amount of grief - it was a new one, so I'd ruled it out...... Finally got to the point where that was all it could be, and it turned out to have a crack on it.. Mine was running like a dog, poor idle, misfiring etc.

  3. well have I finally got to the bottom of this? Someone in one of the replies said that it sounded like it was running rich. Tonight I went back to basics, set the volume control screws (fuel) on the main throttle to 2 1/2 to 3 turns. Did a bit of experimenting and realised that with the idle mixture screw fully closed, it was still running (I presume on the main mixture), so I turn down the mixture screws on each carb and the engine stalls. I then screwed open a touch the idle screw, starts her up and she ran on idle.

Went for a run, she ran really well, no hesitation and after a couple more tweeks with the idle she was ticking over without stalling. The bus now has the acceleration back that she used to have.

Would appreciate you knowledgeable chaps adding some rationale to this, have I fixed the issue or is it just luck or have I still got issues and they are being masked?

(PS not looked at the plugs tonight because it was dark when I had finished).

    Cheers
