Ignition lead lengths

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Zebedee, Dec 15, 2012.

  1. Does anyone know the lengths of the 4 ignition leads plus king lead for a type 4 engine?
Or can someone with a couple of minutes please measure them on theirs for me?

    Ta muchly.

  2. you planning on making your own? or just having issues dude??

  3. I'm trying to find some leads for my T25 and all the ones i can find locally have the newer pin type connections and my engine seems to have the old style DIN coil and dizzy just like bays do. Its not supposed to but it does. The proper ones for mine are not easily available anymore according to my parts man. :(
I'm hoping the leads for a type 4 motor will be the same length as he can get them next day.

I've already measured the ones on my 1600 bay and 2 are too short. :(
    Apparently i need 2x 53cm long ones and 2x 74cm long ones.

  4. someone probably swapped the coil and cap, as they're cheaper that the correct ones... someone had done this to my first mk2 golf that I had ::)

    Is your T25 a wasserboxer??

  6. Paul, yep its a wasserboxer. Though may end up GTi powered next year. ;)

Zed, I know the length i need but not if they are the same as type 4 engine ones.

  7. Interesting that type 1 leads don't fit

Wasn't a cheap set of £10 leads you were trying was it?? I've often found with those that they can be up to 50mm short per lead

A set of these should work, as I've found that Taylor leads have plenty of slack in them, plus the king lead you cut to length and crimp the end on yourself

  8. I've no idea what they were to be honest. They came in the van when i bought it and i never used them. They do feel a little plasticy so maybe cheapo ones.

T1 leads don't have long enough plug sockets to reach through the tin.

  12. Keep up Ricky, it's in a T25...

A little background on the wasserboxer is that it is essentially a Type 1 engine, but water-jacketed

  16. Paul, i just took a set of new good quality silicon ignition leads off my my beetles engine thats sat in the shed and they are nearly 2" longer than the ones i was trying to fit so i'm gonna use those. :)

    Just for Ricky. :)

  17. excellent

One of the reasons why I never buy cheap leads ;)

  18. Would never have thought they'd be that much shorter though. ::)

The wbx leads have these metal caps on the ends which the T1 leads don't.

Should i replace the T1 ends with the ones off my old WBX leads or do you reckon it won't make a jot of difference?
They only screw on like the plastic/bakolite ends of T1 leads.

  19. how long are you planning on running them??

the correct end is a heat shield to protect the plug/lead end

  20. Mmm, may just buy the correct ones then. GSF have them instock near my parents so i can pick them up at Xmas (and get a discount too). ;)

Its hopefully gonna get a 2.0 GTi 8v transplant in the spring when its warm enough to work outside without freezing my arse off.
