How do I work out how much something will cost imported from the USA. Looking to buy a Jaycee product that costs $58?
Anything valued at more than £15 attracts VAT and the Post Office charge you a fee of £8 for the privilege! https://www.gov.uk/importing-and-exporting-by-post
I have imported model aeroplane parts from the states, (approx $100) and never been charged anything. maybe lucky, I don't know. Tony
Its 10% duty on the declared value then VAT on the lot, including postage costs. The PO charge less than a tenner, Parcel Farce charge up to £19.99!
You can get lucky with bigger amounts, but VWED is right, it's £15 for VAT plus the Post Office or courier fee. Obviously nobody condones tax avoidance, but if the supplier writes in the value at $20 on the customs label .............
Yes, gift is hard from a commercial supplier, but I have got stuff sent to my sister's in Texas and then gifted to get it over here before. Depends how the sums work really.
Another thing to consider is that under valuing on a shipping document is classed as fraud... So businesses over in the states are likely to tell you to jog on
While that is true, it can also mean you're less likely to get your parts, and there is bugger all that you can do about it!!
