Internal water tank

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by Audrey@last, Jul 24, 2021.

  1. Hello everyone, I am rebuilding my van after over nine years of it being off the road in various garages. I am struggling to work out how the internal water tank works. I have a whale pump tap and obviously a tank fill hole on the other side of the sink but the hole going out of the underside of the van
doesn’t seem to have anyway of shutting off. I don’t suppose anyone has a photo of what should be there please. Pictures of the whole set up would be great, including how the tap attaches etc. Thank you!
I would also love some photos of how the pop top (Westfalia rear elevation) should attach to the roof bed and how it should all fasten down when the pop top is lowered. So many questions, massive thanks to anyone who can help.

    Hi.
I've attached some photos of the pipes below my water tank pipe. The red arrow is the drain and the green the flow to the tap. Hope these help.

I'm not sure which part of the upper bed and westie roof you mean as the bed and roof are separate (afaik) and unfortunately I'm mid job so I can't take the camper out to lift the roof, but if you could explain more, I might be able to see what your after. The final photo shows the hinge area for the bed above the back seat area. I have removed the folding part of my bed to give more storage space. The actual padded base just rests (afaik) on the rails.

  3. Thank you Chris, it looks like your water set up is rather different to mine but it has introduced the idea of using flexible pipe, so thank you.

Which model Westfalia is it? There should be a little plate on the bed support panel with a code number on it.
Or post some pics up of what you're struggling with, that always helps...

  5. Plate says continental 3 02/82. Does that help?

Yeah, now we know it's a Continental its a bit easier to help:thumbsup:
There are a few Conty owners on here, in fact we had one 14 or so years ago. Iirc it had an upright tank behind the ice box that simply had a screw cap on the outlet, which went through a hole in the floor. That was just so the tank could be drained after use.
It had a pump tap on top of the sink which simply screwed into the top of the tank.
    Try a Google search referencing:
    Thelatebay Westfalia Continental Sink.
There's been quite a bit on here over the years.
Likewise with the bed. There are some copies of the handbook for the Continental online which may give you a start.
Here are some links to start you off :D

@Audrey@last .The bed in the Continental roof rises and falls with the roof ordinarily. It's held in with 2 rubber toggles, like those rubber bonnet catches people used to fit to minis.
The bed is deployed by simply unhooking it off the toggles.
    Iirc @nicktuft s, Tufty is a Continental??

The water tank is just how @theBusmonkey says.
I will post up some pictures of the Continental set up I have tomorrow. Be careful with the water drain hole for the tank as you do not want to fracture pipe arrangement.

As promised albeit a poor photo as it's well protected. There must be a decent photo somewhere on the Internet,

Thanks for the post as the tank needed draining. I can also see that the jacking points could do with a lick of paint

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

As I don't see anyone has made this clear, the butterfly thing in the above pics ^ is a tap on the drain, but if it's already snapped off...

  11. Thank you very much, the handbook is brilliant.

  12. Thank you for the pictures. They certainly help. Do you have a separate hole for emptying the sink? We are considering linking the sink drain and the pipe at the bottom of the water tank so they can both go out the one hole. Would that work?

  13. Thank you, so the two side toggles attach the bed to the roof when it is elevated and the bed sits on the roof when it is down. Is that right? Is there anything to hold the whole roof down when the van is moving?
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

No it wouldn't work as the pic I posted hides the drain from the sink due to the sealing flap obscuring its exit.
The sink discharge needs to be separate from the fresh water tank surely !

I think, think mind can't remember with certainty, that the toggles are repositioned into hooked cups that are bolted to the edge of the roof opening.
Check with a continental owner to be sure..
@nicktuft or @Meltman may be able to help?

Yes there are three "toggles" and they are either side with one at the back.
Good quality replacement toggles are hard to find so if you have the originals I'd hang on to them.

  19. Thank you both very much, that is very helpful. My next continental question is about the under dash shelves. I can see where they attach
by the handbrake and under the wheel but can’t work out how they attached at the door. There are no visible anchor points. Any ideas?

  20. Could you possibly send a photo of the “one at the back” and how it works. I have the side ones sorted now back can’t quite fathom the third.
    Thank you very much.
