Is my rev counter accurate?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by popester63, Mar 26, 2013.

  1. I have a rev counter on my 1600 T1 but am paranoid that it is reporting too low a number of revs.

The engine is getting pretty noisy by the time I get to 3,000 rpm which is as high as I ever dare push it.

Today on a run, I was registering 2500 rpm at 70mph.

Is there any reason why a working rev counter would give a false reading, or should I just boot my bus harder and trust.

Much more than 70 and it won't thank you.
No idea about the revs though.

is it one of those for a 4/6/8 cylinder engine that's switcheable? Could it be on the wrong setting by chance & giving a low reading..

whats the idle rev reading from it?

  4. 4 gears and only doing 2500rpm at 70 mph. I'd be surprised if thats correct. I'm sure there will be someone along in a minute to let us know.

  6. Cheers Matty. Yes, that would be good. In the meantime I will continue to exercise prudence.

Could we firm up on 15th April?

  7. I have 175s on the front, so speedo probably reads 70 for 55 ;) but with the window down and the breeze thru my hair, who cares

2500 rpm at 55 is probably more like it!
Compare your speedo to a SatNav and see how far out you really are.

  9. Yes, I will take a few readings from TomTom to try and calibrate revs/mph more accurately.

  10. Sorted by Matty - it was set for a 6 cyl so was reading under. Just needs some front seats so I can go for a drive and see what revs I have really been doing
