Is This a Riviera or Not?

Yes, the top goes straight up, but somebody once mentioned it was called something else because of the metal roof rack. (or rather, that rack was as sign that it was something other.)
Perhaps it's just a type of Riviera that has a different name, like how there is a Westfalia that is a "Weekender".
    Has anybody heard of this?
The vinyl is golden/yellow. The 3-way fridge is by the slider with a sink on top.
It has a table that folds down like a Weekender. The closet is also on the slider side.
Notice the jalousie window has only two louvers. I always thought that was odd but maybe it's common on the older ones and I never noticed.
My friend literally found it in a barn with 13,000 original miles on it. (It's still only up to about 34,000 or so.)
So it's probably fair to say it is all original, just as it was when the first owners bought it. (an elderly couple who wanted to do a bit of road-tripping before they went tits-up)
I don't know the story behind that odd roof rack, but I love how it looks.
One could install a sunroof with a rack like that.
Oh boogers. I drew the wrong tail lights on it. It has the small older style, not that it's relevant, I guess.

  2. If the pop top is accurate then I'd say no as the Riviera has more of a flare to the rear of the skirt, it also looks a little low but that could be just the drawing.

  3. No, that's just my drawing. I wasn't going for extreme accuracy back when I drew it so the top is a bit short.
This bus is just like a Riviera except for that rack, as far as I know.
I'm not familiar with Riv. interiors, or jalousies, but the penthouse is the same.

  4. Does it have the internal reinforcing roof bars?

Could be that the front roof bit has been removed and has an after market window

  5. Hey I found some old photos.
What do ya know. The roof is tall like a Riviera but it is a bit different, isn't it.
I honestly don't recall anything about internal bars.
And anything is possible, but why on Earth would an elderly couple swap out both triple jalousies for doubles and the roof rack on a brand new camper?[IMG] [IMG]
Her brother asked for a haircut while they were *******ed on their asses, so she gave him a mohawk. Idiots. lol
Here's a stock photo of what her interior looks like. Look, the fridge door is different too.⬇[IMG]

  6. Yeah
that's a riviera same as mine but it's blue and If you drive without the front pod I think it would leak and slow you down, as well as it's very flat fronted the roof.

  7. Also the support lifting mechanism is on the outside of the roof

  8. Oh yeah. I never noticed her supports are on the inside. What IS this thing?

  9. The roof is a Riviera with the front fibre glad roof rack missing.

The interior I can see is Westfalia, not Riviera. I don't believe the jalousie style window is a Riviera either so its a home brew build of various parts

Try the rivi register to see if there ate pics of earlier buses with those windows but I don't believe its rivi
    :)

  10. Actually looking at the roof closer I'm not convinced it is a rivi as the roof mechanism isn't visible. The front of the roof also has a different profile.

Its possible its a westy weekender, the tintop westy which someone has just out any old roof on. It's obviously a vw bus roof, it actually looks like it could be a rear hinged westy roof which is modified to go straight up like a rivi
    :)

  11. Now that makes sense.
    So let's think about this.
It's 1971-72. A VW dealer gets a crossover with the new front and the old splitty rear.
Then it gets the Westfalia Weekender package, to which is added a pop-top pieced together from a Westy roof and the Rivvy suspension, all while it's still fresh off the line.
And the windows remain a mystery.
This thing takes the cross-over mash up to a whole new level.
OH! And the Weekender probably didn't have a fridge. That's why the door looks different. The original owners must have installed that, as well as the propane tank. (which is on the wrong side!)

  12. It's a Sportsmobile, one of mine and @Majorhangover's favourites :D

There was one for sale on The Samba but work won't let me access it. Type VW T2 Sportsmobile into Google and you'll see what I mean.

  13. THAT'S IT!
That's what Somebody called it once.
It is a great bus. I especially like the fact that the fridge can run on propane.
If you install a mini stove-top that folds up and down across the walk-thru, its every bit as good as a Westy Deluxe, Berlin.
