Took van out for a 50 mile round trip last night to Clumber Park to try out new awning. When I got back, I did something that I have never done before and went to check oil within 10mins of parking up....dipstick was too hot to hold ! I had driven reasonably energetically on A roads & motorway, to check that I had fitted a new throttle pedal and cable correctly, but she's a 2litre auto and never went above 65. Only recent mods was change to electronic ignition, fitted and timing re-set by Autohaus Dolby of Sheffield. As I say, never noticed before as normally checked oil next day. What would cause overheating...or is it just the weather ? Off to Lands End in 2 weeks so want to sort if there is a problem.
I reckon the weather dude, also a metal dipstick on a hot engine on a hot day, its like leaving your spoon in your hot tea. My dipstick is cooler when the weather is cooler, it was pretty dam hot on sunday so the dipstick was hotter. Personally, if your oil level is fine and the vehicle drives fine it it ok
The dip stick will be hotter a short while after turning the engine off than when the engine is running
That brings back memories......met Lofty ?? in Bridlington years ago......he was in Woolworths signing copies of his record / book ( can't remember which .) Thanks for temp related comments........oil level was a little low ( almost a litre )......must remember to check regularly .
Thanks Stan.....you are the man !! I had tried to do a search, but didn't find anything suitable......cheers for link.
You need to check the dipstick temperature immediately you stop, not after 10 minutes. The temperature increases once you switch off.
currently 34 degrees in the school garden, it's sheltered and virtually no breeze; its a bit warm. I'm setting up the sprinklers for later
It got up to 35 outside and 32 inside today We got both hoses out today one on a swinging sprinkler and one aimed up into the trees so the water came down like rain, the kids were drenched! But very cool
