I noticed my bus was getting a bit loud with the crackle of leaking exhaust sound reflecting off bridge parapets as I drove over them. So I went to look at the exhaust and removed it and the 4 into 1 from the rear of the engine and the heat exchanger exhaust tubes. And I found that the head to exhaust gaskets had failed on both sides, on number 2 and number 4 cylinder. The problem is that the standard gaskets have a hole which fits over the exhaust port and has a crushable section around the hole that relies on the flange on the exhaust pressing on it to make a seal. But the JK exhaust has larger bore tubing and larger holes in the flanges (its inside diameter is the same as the outside diameter of the exhaust tubes in the heat exchanger) so the crushable section of the gasket does not crush. So the exhaust blows round the crushable metal and out the sides of the gasket which gradually burns away. At the moment it is holding together by using exhaust sealing paste as I did not have any spare gaskets with me. Does anybody know of either gaskets intended for larger ported engines or some material that can be used to make exhaust gaskets that survive the cylinder head temperatures ?
There may be something stock that will fit, but you could always make your own....send an email to these guys better still, see if they can stamp some up, or get JK to follow it up...
you might want to consider a set of the gaskets supplied with vintage speed systems. http://www.vintagespeed.co.uk/index...tegory_id=26&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=119
