I'll take one please if they are ok for a 73/74 bay

  5. What kind of fuel gauge have you got? Pic? Earlier ones didn't have a voltage regulator.

I was messing around with LED the other day so…here are the pictures...

  7. I'll knock up a few more when the (hopefully working) bits arrive. Want one as well @iblaze ?

They're a good starting point if your gauge is playing up, but will only fix things if the voltage stabiliser is playing up. They are know to expire over the years, especially the "vibrator" type.

@Ian Bell You can give your existing one a quick workout. Check the metal case of the regulator is firmly attached to the metal back of the pod (and that the pod is earthed). Stick your meter on the black lead (other lead on an earthing point) and check you've got +12V with the ignition on. Then check the voltage on the red lead. This should either be hopping up and down (on a vibrator type, difficult to see on a digital meter) or a constant 5-and-a-bit-ish volts with the zener diode type.

    Yes, please, @snotty
It's worth a try. My gauge goes over the maximum, and I can drive like that for quite a few miles before the needle drops to the full mark.

My gauge seems to read nothing, then 3/4, before settling on just below half and working it's way down from there. Does that sound like the regulator, or summat else? I'll try one of your replacements please Rich, if it might help and you've got another batch for sale?

  11. Might be the cause, but more likely to be your sender, I'd say. Could give a new stabiliser a go, but I doubt it's your problem.

I'll get busy when me bits arrive.

After stopping on the M1 to fill my tank on the way to Camper Jam when the fuel gauge read as 1/2 full, (but finding £28.70 filled it to brimming), I fear I too may be in need of a voltage regulator should there be one available (and yes, even when 'brimming' at the filler neck the gauge only read as 3/4 full).

Rich do you give Green Shield stamps with these?

  20. You'll be pleased to hear that that's actually made in China (and a quite dubious design) and can be had direct for about £5 (or £35 from VWH ).
