  1. i have just put the engine and battery back in my t2
and im sorting out the wiring,

tbh there does not seem to much bodged,
the main loom what little there is... seems almost untouched

should i have any side lights at the front....?

i have a pair of old wires ,they look like part of the loom in the passenger footwell,
nr the headlight any idea what they were for ...?

ive got a non working clock next to the speedo, is it standard..?

    non working panel lights

a non working horn button , but another on the dash

where there any lights as standard in the rear i have one blue cable going off from the front passenger side in the tiny loom

i find it all quite interesting..nothing to drastic

ive gotta rip out all the radio gubbins ..that looks like a spiders web behind the radio..

will post some piccys:thumbsup: as i sort stuff out..

(I have sidelights in my 74, part of the headlight wiring loom

(Had a clock in mine, now replaced with a rev counter)

    non working panel lights

(if there is power going to the first in line and a good earth from the central cluster its probably the bulb holders having a bad earth)

(I have a light above the seats, one midway down and one above the engine, all coming from a wire that goes up from the footwell)

  3. thanx for the reply...

re- the side lights mines a 72...

a light above the engine...that sounds essential...:)

  4. Only found evidence of it when I removed the headlining, the switch is like the door ones and in the roof operated by the p/s hatch hinge

  5. It shows a side light on the sambas 72 wiring diagram, grey wire

  6. '72s are a pain as VW were changing over and all sorts of stuff got used. If it's an Import that'll double your woes!
My 72 X-over has TWO sets of sidelights at the front (just for confusion) and another set in the engine bay, plus yet another set of wiring for sidelights in the engine bay but not connected to anything.
I suspect a lot of this is generic loom building with plug ons for different Construction and Use Regs around the world and then of course 40 years of bodging.
I have numerous wiring diagrams and a full copy of the OG VW Manual if you want to borrow them.

  7. my 72 has very little wiring tbh...

there are no wires or bulbs fitted for sidelights at the front...?
are they a legal requirement ..?

there is no rear fog light either ...

  8. Rear Fog lights are not required on a '72

  9. Compared to modern vehicles ALL buses are simple enough.
    As @Bhubesi says, 72s don't need a fog light.
I used the spare space in the rear lights as an extra pair of brake lights. :)
I also turned the lenses upside down and used orange bulbs for a cleaner look.

  10. good ideas there tbr....

    panic over
ive had a look at the headlight housing and there is a lamp in there,
and the main lamp holder has prongs on it to feed it ..so i have side lights...:chewie:

  11. i thought so ...
    thanx tony ...

  12. Your first step is to find a decent wiring diagram - try vintage bus.com - and compare it with what's in your van, otherwise you'll just be guessing.

As Tony said, the wiring in a bus is very basic, so should be straightforward to work out what goes where.
