Leisure battery venting

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Rustydiver, Oct 9, 2012.

  1. Trying to fit my leisure batter and it has two vents, one is ok the other when I connect the angled vent pipe fouls the seat base and don't allow the battery to fit snug. It's the one on the RH side of the battery.

Can I leave one blanked off or do I need both open?
Is it better to vent it off through one off the rubber grommets under the seat or ok in the van?

I did think about taking a small bit off the seat base but it's right where the seat bolt is and don't want to mess with the fixing point!

I'd def want both vents unblocked. Not having the angled piece in one side wouldn't bother me though.

  3. Technically internal batteries should be vented to the outside of the van... as when the battery is charging it releases a gas, that can be explosive....

  4. The problem is that the battery is tight against the RH side off the seat base, think I will have another play tomorrow to see if I can get the battery to sit a bit lower there's only a few mm in it.

  5. If the cap that goes over the holes is one piece then you only need one vent. In the cars that have batteries in the boot there is normally only one vent pipe, if you fit an aftermarket battery then you remove the blank from the relevant side

  6. The gasses are hydrogen and oxygen, thats why you have to top them up with distilled water H20. If you have a good charger, and the battery is described as maintenance free you shouldn't have much if any gas coming off, some batteries attempt to re-combine and recover the gasses back into water. If there is a fault with your regulator or charger and the battery is over charged it will gas.

  8. To quickly re-address the venting question but I have a maintenance free sealed battery would this produce gas? Thanks,

    Robo...

  9. They all produce gas to a certain extent

Im not saying there is no risk but I think its more theoretical than actual.

Ive had vans in the past that have had the main batt under the front seats T25 to name one, I can't remember that being vented,

    My beetle defiantly wasn't.

  11. I was gonna say beetles are in the cabin, and were never vented...

yeah old landies had them under the passenger seat too, charging off the alternator doesn't make batteries gas half as much as on a charger in the shed.

  13. Must admit I used to run a CB off a car battery in my bedroom as a lad with a mains charger topping it up, it only got a bit gassy when the water was low or it was about ready to be swapped for a newer scrounged one!
