Loss of top end power and really loud carb

  1. So I'm hoping somebody can help. 1600 twin port with a solex carb. I was cruising happily down the m5 at about 60. stopped and filled up and when I rejoined the motorway it wouldn't go above 50 and it was really loud, I was lucky to get up some of the hills. I assumed the noise might of been a hole in the exhaust so I stopped to investigate. That's when I discovered the noise seemed to be coming from the carb. I managed to limp home. Since then I've tried everything. Changed in line fuel filter, checked for air leaks on inlet. Checked the tappets and timing. Cleaned the carb. Still no different :(. Any ideas? I am slowly getting balder with every failed attempt to rectify the fault.

    Stuck valve?

  3. Would this not of shown up when I did the tappets?

    Not neccessarily.

  5. Ok thanks zed. I'll check.

If an inlet valve has stuck a bit it will make a racket through the carb and loose power + engine will be lumpy. Have you got a compression tester?

  7. Zed is spot on... Stuck valve (or lifter) or not seating properly...

I take it you've checked that you've not blown a spark plug out?

  8. I've borrowed a compression tester. So I'll test it tomorrow. However. On closer inspection the exhaust valves on 1&3 don't seem to open as much as the others. So I have a horrible feeling the cam might of de-lobed :/.

  9. I solved this. Turns out the cam lobe for 1&3 exhaust valves had worn almost into a circle. New cam fitted and its back to normal :)

    zed and bernjb56 like this.
  10. If I may "highjack" this thread? on a not dis similar topic you fellas that work campers for your folding notes> given the choice of a comp. test or leak down test ,which would you opt for ?>or is it much of a muchness ?>and ta.

  11. Each has its own purpose... compression test gives you a quick look at the engine, but a leak down will show up problems with valve seats or piston rings
