Measurement of Sliding Door Inner Sill Track Needed...

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by motorcycleemptyness, Oct 1, 2013.

  1. Can somebody please measure for me the depth of the middle sill Sliding Door Track on a standard original Middle sill .

Mine doesn't seem deep enough (may have been 'adjusted' by PO) , and therefore the outer sill has nothing to attach to.

On the straight part it measures 30mm , i'm guessing 40mm would be about right ?

    See pictures below

Was going to say it looks right and your sill's too far out. It should tuck right under. Before you fit it, did you know you can get a better version of these sills with the top curled over to keep the seal in place like the original. You'll need to phone and check as I can't remember for sure who sells the good ones.

  4. If i tuck the top of the outer sill under that 30mm middle sill the bottom of the sill is lower than both the middle and inner sill . ???

  6. Everything else seems to look ok ?

Yes it does. It should overlap a bit, or rather the middle should overlap the inner.
So your outer sits ok, but nothing to weld it to because the middle is too short.
    This is OG:

  8. The middle sill is the same height as the inner sill from memory ?

  9. On a side note... Your c post repair may need to be shortened, I made mine the same and I had to alter it as it wouldn't allow my rear arch repair to sit fully flush

  10. Maybe the middle sill i bought (non genuine) is not tall enough then as it is the same height as the inner sill .

I may have to extend the middle sill , that'll be messy :(

Got any pics of your c post repair ? Bit of a job to know what to do when the bits you are remaking ain't there !!!

  11. Will this still be the case once i've extended the height of the middle sill ?

Trouble is on sliding door middle sill, if the bottom's toast and you decide to repair to retain the tracks like you have, (despite you saying it's a bought one) you have nothing to go by. I repair them an extra 1/2" long so I can trim when the time comes. I think you C post looks ok (very nice actually).

  13. Yes , you are right , i retained the original top part of the middle sill for various reasons , It was Solid , It worked ok and the one i bought looked nothing like it ! I also didn't want to 'upset' the position of the sliding door. So as you have probably guessed i cut the new one up and used the part i needed to remake the middle sill good again. Surely the rear part of the middle sills top edge sits up against the underside of the floor ? Otherwise there would be a gap ?

Yes it does. So you used the full height behind the C post? - I'm too tight to buy one just for that bit and I know how they go so I fabricate that as well. I always aim to retain the tracks as you have done. As you say what's available is part of it and it's the wrong shape. It does work though I've had to fit the best part of them previously.
Other test of course is if clamp on arch to inner and see where it wants to sit. That may well hang down too low as well.

  15. I bought the middle sill with the intention of replacing the whole thing , but when i saw how different the sliding door track was i decided to leave well alone. I could have made the bit i needed , but i'd had the sills for ages and couldn't send them back , so i thought expensive as it was i'd use what i had.
Seriously though , if the panel is 5 - 10mm to short , how do they get away with selling them ?
Ok i can weld another piece to the bottom of it to extend it , but wtf ?

  16. I've just checked the price of that middle sill .......:(

I've did exactly the same first bus resto buying and not using the whole thing for exactly the same reasons. Everybody who restores a bus goes through this I think.
I don't recall having to extend it though.

  18. Aren't they like £35. For that you would expect a fitting part huh?
