More gas, the metal is burning..

Because its a synergic welder, it feeds the wire at a varying speed dependent on the actual current..So you set the target current according to the metal thickness and the voltage according to the welding wire thickness and then you can hear the wire speed ramping up and down as you weld.

On my similar "do everything (in a basic way) as well as MIG" welder doing about 1mm bus panels I set the "current" dial between 35 and 50 with 0.6mm wire.

Once you get used to it, it works well.

Consider finding an evening class at a tech college where they will teach more techniques and give you things to practice on.

  4. Thanks hoping to have more of a play over the weekend. That was in gasless so not sure what I can change other than amps and technique.

I'll have a look for a course, problem is I'm away 3 or 4 nights a week so have limited opportunity.

i'm sure in the hands of someone more skilled it'll be a good little machine

Once you start fannying about with it, don’t think you can just weld this tiny little bit with your eyes shut as it’s way too easy to get arc eye through the eyelid. Also don’t practice welding without decent gloves on for more than a millisecond. Remember at all times that it’s a lethal machine and will do its best with its mates the grinders to decapitate you, and damage any appendages exposed and set fire to anything it fancies in the nearest postcodes or the other side of that panel you’re welding. There are loads of on line welding schools that’ll get you set up in the basics and safety measures,,,,,, pleeeeeeease pay attention to them especially the sparks can go everywhere and I mean everywhere, in your eye, up your nose, in your boots, and places you’d sooner not think of having a bit of extra warming up as you’ll see by the spatter on your fluxed gasless welding. And test your helmet, usually the sun helps here, but test it every time you’re gonna weld sumfink. If you use a headlamp on your helmet, make sure it don’t interfere with how it works. Just do a bit of research and night time reading to get the hang of it.

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,very therapeutic and satisfying :)

  6. I had to do a placement in the welding shop as part of my Skillcentre YTS course.
Early morning in the welding shop was freezing, so the first job of the day was to get a thick piece of steel offcut, pull the bay curtain closed and strike a long arc line across the offcut, then dab my gauntlets on it to warm my hands.

  7. You're not helping...!

  8. I had to spend a week might have been a month in the shipyard welding workshop, my dad was a welder and all his mates did their best to teach me.
