Missing oil filler cap

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by busloverkent, Sep 22, 2018.

  1. we are travelling through France and have just noticed we are missing our oil filler cap. A little oil is spraying on the engine. Is this something urgent to sort or can it wait until we’re back home?

  2. Hi bud , have you any idea how long it has been missing ? Ie top up or service ? How long you have been driving without it . I would try and get one if you have chance ,especially if you have quite away to go . Maybe make something temp to stop it peeing everywhere till you can get some5hing . You could loose more oil than you need ? How’s the oil level on dipstick ?

You might find a plastic filler cap at one of the service stations...Most caps have a vane plastic vane that holds it in position.

  4. Replace it, engine fires can be caused by oil getting onto the exhaust. Oil filler caps are not hard to obtain most VW oil filler cabs will fit Polo Golfs etc will fit T1 engines. And some petrol filler caps.

  5. Use a wire coat hanger. This will also improve the reception on your radio.

  6. No big prob. Stick a bit of clingfilm over the top of the filler. Or pop into a friendly local VW dealer and get a plastic filler cap from a Golf or similar. They'll fit (and are much better).

Stick a sock in it and hold it in with a cable tie. Presto ! an EMPI breather filter !
