We've got a few more odds and ends sorted this past couple of weeks, mainly cleaning and checking parts, make sure they are okay.

Pressed the small end bearings in to the conrods, drilled out the two oilways and reamed them to fit the wrist pins..sorted!

The Flywheel was covered in rust and grease, a good soak in the parts washer and alls well again. Apparently its a 228mm from a 2.0 motor..sounds perfect!
It just needs skimming over the clutch face, there are a few rough spots which needs machining off!

Final thing we have sorted is the OG cam gear, looks much more substantial than the cast aluminium alloy ones, so with a good clean up, we prepared it for spot milling to accept the five bolt cam.

Are you going to modify the con rods to provide oil spray cooling of the pistons per VW Technical Bulletin 10-90 T01? http://www.ratwell.com/mirror/www.dolphinsci.com/techbull.html

I had read about the con rod modification over on the samba - I was going to ask that question :)

Is the modification worthwhile, it does sound beneficial..thanks for the link, I appreciate it!

I modified mine, whether it makes a difference I don’t know but it can’t do any harm and VW thought it was a good idea.

We have the cutters and Bridgeport milling machine, should be relatively easy to do!

  9. I'm loving this;)

  10. You have oil jets on turbo diesel motors that spray oil on the piston... So it'll definitely do something!!

Looks like a mod I'll be doing too once I've got my mill moved in and plugged in

    @Paul Weeding or @zed

Have any of you guys experienced problems with Silverline bearings?

Ive been doing a dummy run with the crank earlier today and came across what I think is an issue with the #3 bearing, its got one of the oilways drilled incorrectly - the left hand case half is correct, next to the dowel location but the one on the opposite side doesn't line up with the gallery on the case:

    Old genuine VW bearing:

The main concern is that it will cause oil starvation as there is no way oil can get past the hole!

Ive had a look at paulandchez AP series build thread, he uses Mahle bearings and looking at his #3, that's drilled correct!

I didn't think so mate!! I have called Bigrich at Coolair, he is looking into it for me! I do know Paul uses Silverline bearings, I wonder if he has come across similar issues!

Ill send the link to Rich, let him have a look :D

  14. That's not one I've seen before!!

Easiest fix is to drill another hole in the bearing, or wait for coolair to send you out another set/bearing

I need to email silverline as it is... another voice in the "we need oversize case bearings" as I was having an interesting conversation with Jim at stateside the other day!!

Ive emailed Rich again with the thread link and also paulandchez' image - Im sure he will sort it out, Im not keen on drilling tbh, we can do it accurately but I'd be concerned it would weaken the bearing!

At worst Ill ask them to source 0.75 oversize Mahle mains for me

  16. Stick with the silverlines - Mahles will be aluminium backed centre mains, and according to Jim, Porsche recalled all of the early 914s that were fitted with aluminium backed centre mains

Will do mate, I think the best bet for me is to call Rich tomorrow when I get back from nipping up north :D

  19. Good spot ....how many people would check this or just expect them to be correct .....
From memory I never checked my KS ones
