Think you missed the point on the social housing. There are not enough small properties for people who need them so many people will be forced into a benefit cut simply because they cannot move. Then the government says it's their fault but is it?
Same with unemployment, the government is doing it's best to divide the nation into tax payers and scroungers conveniently overlooking the fact they're screwing the economy so actually it's not laziness but lack of jobs is the problem.

This morning I heard a phone in on the radio. One caller was bemoaning people who go off sick and claim benefits. He "employs" 300 staff in his restaurant chain apparently. I expect he regards himself a self made man. What he conveniently overlooks in in fact what he is is a massive benefit scrounger. His business may work, but only because the vast majority of his staff are being propped up by the tax payer in benefits to boost their incomes to a liveable level. We all pay out taxes so this and other similar businessmen and woman can live the good life. This company probably has 250 of it's staff on the minimum wage. If they typically need just £50 a week to bump there wages up that's a lot of our money propping up his business - £650,000 a year in fact. I wonder what his bottom line would look like without this? I bet that's more than his profit. In other words his business is in fact a failure and only works because we the tax payer give him for than half a million quid a year. And I think you'll find that's a conservative estimate - it's probably double that.
The same bloke probably does a mass legal tax evasion by employing everyone part time on 16 hours a week to completely shirk paying employers NI contributions. So he's a benifit scrounging tax evader isn't he? The very sort of person he was complaining about. So blinkered.

BTW if anyone's interested I kind of agree with the debt thing, I don't get in debt unless I know I can pay it off quickly and a debts a debt.

BUT how many of you might fall foul of this if you lost your job and couldn't find another for a few months? You may be able to pay off that credit card now, but after 3 months without income what would you do if you had loans etc? It's expensive moving house. You wouldn't get a mortgage as no job, so you're renting and that possibly costs more than your mortgage. What's the point of causing all this hardship and hassle over such a small debt?

But i haven't heard of a story where someone has asked for a smaller house and not got it and if none available then that's not there fault and they sould not pay
I agree that if every person it effected asked for a smaller house there will be a shortage in witch case it will benefit the economy as they would have to build them

My point is its not their house and its fair that if they want a bigger house than they need they should pay more.

Its often reported that there is a shortage of social house well if those that can afford the going rate in the area they should be kicked out so someone more in need

I must admit I don't totally get social housing. It does surprise me though how well off some of the tenants are.

When we first moved to Ely and bought our first house our mortgage was £600/month - 20 years ago a lot of money to us. My sister-in-law rented next door - it was a semi - for £20/week. Now my mortgage is £400 for a bigger house, but the rent that was £20 a week is now more like £150 a week. Rents have rocketed compared to income.

Social housing was a loop - the money stayed in the community. Local people fixed them, locals lived in them, local council got the rent.

But no - a better idea is flog them all off and get the claiments into private housing, whack up the rents, get that money out of a pot that benefits all and into the bank accounts off the well-off. Fair enough if you're happy not to have an equitable society to live in.

^^^ That's one of the things I don't understand about council housing!

  12. Up until 18 months ago I had a 6 bed house and a triple garage.
Then came the divorce. I now own a car, nothing else!!! My wife did quite well though.
I also do know some very rich lawyers. :(
I now live in a two up, two down Council house but I'm infinitely happier. I have a good woman and a bad bus, what more could you want?

I agree, we all see new 4x4's or big bmw's parked outside council houses where they both work and earn good money, lots of council housing is handed down from the parents who needed it 40 years ago, the waiting lists for these houses are miles long and should be taken away if you earn over a certain amount
