Oil Leak Type 4

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Owen Snell, May 10, 2013.

  1. After showing no evidence of leaking when moved short distances, we went for a decent run in the van and now there's a lot of oil to the rear of the engine behind the fan. Where might this be coming from? I've cleaned it up so I can try and trace it better, but fresh oil too, so hard to see where it's leaking.

  2. Dipstick ??

    Mine used to leak there

  3. Dipstick bellows just found was loose and oil bubbled out put a clip on and sealed it,
    Steve,

  4. Looks like it may well be the cause. Dipstick bellows? Not got anything like that fitted! Pics please!

  5. How easy was it to get a clip on the bellows .what did you take of to get to it

  6. Mine be leaking there

  7. That would explain the oil then

There is a metal tube that runs through the fan housing on the end of this is a rubber bellows going through the to the oil filler on the block.
The Dipstick runs down this tube and through the bellows into the sump :)

  8. Looks like this... unfortunately the quality varies from batch to batch, so it's a proper gamble as to how long they're going to last!!

  9. Where does this go? I've got a tube that the dipstick sits in, but this appears to be fixed into the block, although I would say the leak is at the base. Going to get a torch out now and have a closer look.

  10. Lucky enough I had the head off that side and could get too it quite easily,
    Steve,

  11. My engine is in pieces at minute ill try and take some pics in the am and post here

  12. I know where it is I can see and touch it but as for getting a clip round it ...... At the moment it appears to have cable ties holding it

I managed to change mine with not to much of an issue, didn't need to take anything apart but was fiddly

  14. It wouldn't be fun if it wasn't fffffiiiddddllly

  15. Looking from underneath, I can feel that the boot is in position but no idea about its condition at the moment. I'm going to clean up under the engine and go for a spin later to see if I can get an idea where the oil's coming from.

This is new and old - you can see the old one is on steroids ImageUploadedByTapatalk1368356878.903560.jpg

  17. You can do it insitu, if I can anybody can.

I thought I had sorted my leak in that area but still got a small one, I have had the filler pipe off and made up a new gasket, still leaks from somewhere in that area.

  18. They must just use cheapo rubber, not nitrile. Normal rubber always swells if exposed to oil for any length of time.

  19. How much stuff needs removing to get at it?

  20. Is the thermostat all fitted?

If the roller wheel and bolt aren't, then the M6 hole isn't a blind one, and goes all the way into the case... quite a cheeky oil leak if you've not seen it before!! :)
