Oil usage.

  1. I'm sure it's been done before but it'll cost a fortune to search from here.
So the question is how much oil usage is acceptable.
It leaks very little but appears to be drinking it some other way?
There's not clouds of smoke and it got through the MOT so should I care if it eats a bit?
I've done 600 miles this weekend and it runs fine, just have to remember to check and re-fill the oil very two tank fulls of petrol.

  2. How much do you put in each time?

  3. I d do a comp test just to be on the safe side.

  4. A lot!
    A pint each time.
Bare in mind that oil is "free" ;) in my world and that the motor has done 303,000 miles. Top end was rebuilt at 180,000. :)
No nasty noises, the back of the bus isn't covered in oil and I'm not laying down a James Bond style smoke screen.
I'm minded to ignore it unless there's a good reason not to.

That's a hell of a lot to be using.

  6. That's a lot of miles on your engine! I wouldn't worry about the odd pint (half-litre).

  7. Yeah, a pint every 4/500 miles with that sort of mileage on your engine is very good indeed!!

There are plenty of people with less miles on their engines, who're using more oil than that

It'll be valve guides and piston rings where it's going!! :)

  8. Cheers Paul, I suspected as much but as long as there's no serious reason not to carry on, there's little point in forking out for a re-build when he just keeps going and oil is free.

  9. Mine is like that especially last year going across the alps into Italy and back across the Dolimites when the engine was getting so hot the fuel was evaporating in the fuel filter when I stopped, but the engines runs okay but uses a bit of oil know and again,
    Steve,

Blimey, if that's normal my engine must be nails!

  11. Just don't forget to do your oil changes as normal, or you'll get carbon/acid deposits building up in the sump
