Hi all, the roof cutout on my van looks homemade to say the least.

I would really like to tidy the ends up and need your help.

Please can you post some piccies of your insides where the hole meets the roof. Both ends.

I'm in Hampton TW way if anyone would let me have a nose around their van.

    Thanks all.

  2. If that was Southampton you wouldn't be far from me and it just so happens I've just removed the bellows from the pop top to assess the extent of the rust on the roof.

Hmm - down in Southampton next weekend - will it still be off?

If it's a standard late Moonraker type then I'm in Twickenham...(TW2). I'll have her out next weekend.

  5. some of the 'professional' roof cuts look pretty amateur tbh.....based on the principle that time is money, and they'll be covered in trim anyway....

I think that is the problem. I don't have any trim.
Mine looks like it's been butchered. If my van was left alone in the house at night, it would definitely go down into the dark cellar on its own when it heard a noise!!

  7. I did my own cutting, bending and riveted corners, years ago when I installed a Devon style pop top, in Dubai.
It was not the neatest job I would like to have done, but considering the tooling I had available, angle grinder, big hammer and two pieces of angle iron, clamped together with G clamps, and it was my first, and only attempt, it turned out ok.
The good bits were the corners which were riveted in with aircraft solid rivets.
18 months ago my handy work was uncovered when my resto. company removed the roof.
I was a little embarrassed about it, but they said it was about the best they had ever seen!
Some of the "factory" jobs from the Devon production line are really terrible, product of using a tin can opener springs to mind!!
Check out the pictures on the Resto threads on here, and you will be amazed.

Thanks for this, I think some trim or Pleather (I have another thread running) may sort me out. It just looks very untidy.

  9. My bus has just had a new headlining fitted, looks stunning and neatly covers my handywork!!

  11. Yes, and I expect to around most of the weekend. I'm about thirty minutes east of Southampton.

Thanks @trebormint, I may give you a shout if that is ok.

I believe they were,t using an angle grinder to avoid the need to protect against colateral spark damage to windows etc so they're snipped out and bent round by hand. Worst is they appear then not to have painted the raw edge.
