Rear brakes - drum question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dr Ben, Oct 18, 2013.

  1. Hi

My handbrake is a bit rubbish and I think I need to put a touch of weld on the spreader bar but I think I am almost out of adjustment with the shoes too (they were new last year) and bought some time....but I think new drums are now needed.

My question is whether it's ok to replace the drums without changing the shoes?

    Cheers Ben

  2. I don't see why that would be a problem, unless your shoes are down to the metal.;)

  3. As a new set of shoes is only £15. I'd put new shoes in as well.

  4. The shoes are ok, drums a bit thin hence new ones needed, wasn't sure about best practice or if ok to do. I guess they are not too expensive....just trying to save some money really.

The problem is I can never be bothered to take drum apart before ordering bits and my van is an odd beast with cross over bits and early bits and late bits but is a 74 so the shoes are not straightforward to get right ones!

I shall have to take it to bits first! MOT next week hence panic!

    Cheers
    Ben

  5. My cross-dresser is the same, I've now taken to looking at the suppliers parts list for the 'correct' part, then buying the other one as it's bound to be that anyway.

The spreader bars wear out as well

  7. sorry not trying to hi jack but i think im in similar boat , but until you strip everything down you dont specifically know exactly what you need without spending copiuos amounts of dosh on things you might not need . OR us crossdressers should we? can we ? buy a bolts and braces kit to cover eventualities if so where and how much per wheel or both as youd have to do both ?? and what do we ask for?

  8. Well jk not far away but the website does not look like they are open on Saturday now? So will strip brakes and then go to gsf for the bits.

    Cheers
    Ben
