refurbish chrome wheels.. ?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by hibiscrub, Nov 11, 2013.

  1. Ive got Chrome Empi Interceptor/Cyclone wheels on my bus and was initially going to swap for originals.
Am now somewhat attached to them, but they are in moderate/poor condition.
[IMG]Ps this is my best wheel
Saw that Birdy has had his new wheels polished up but 'Spit & Polish' cant rechrome mine.
Anyone in the south had theirs done/ any recommendations where?
    I'm Guildford way
    Thanks

  2. White Hammerite and a paint brush

  3. white!!!!??????????

  4. Match your bumpers :) Or do them black or cream

Cheaper than having them polished, my mate painted his chrome empi 5s white when they went poop

  5. Re chroming them properly will cost more than the wheels are worth tbh as they have to stripped back, copper coated then chromed, then polished....it costs at least £100 to have two door handles done properly (by Triple S), so imagine what four alloys would cost:eek:
NB/ the chrome plating on empi copies is poor by comparison...hence why you're asking the question....top notch chrome will last thirty, forty or more years if looked after (look at old Rollers and Bentleys)
One solution would be to have the chrome removed and then have the wheels Nickel plated...This produces a silver satin finish, which can then be polished to mirror. The plating is relatively cheap, but polishing is down to time....as they are pretty intricate it will be relatively expensive.
Other options include stove enameling/powder coating (mixed results, ranging from excellent to p*ss poor depending on who does them) or shot/bead blasted , primed, painted, lacquered...
Believe it or not, one of the best and cheapest methods of refurbing alloys is to have them blast cleaned with a very soft media, which gives a soft alloy finish....then several very light dust coats of 'Steel Wheels', followed by a gloss laquer.
Plastic dipping can look great, but ask first.
To have four alloys done professionally, to a very high standard, will be not much less than a new set of rims...they'll look better than new of course, but you may want to think what sort of money you're prepared to pay, and what finish you'd be happy with.
Often, by the time you've got your tyres on and polished the van up, even OK wheels look fine

  6. You could always rub them down and get them powder coated in chrome paint, no-one would ever know, and they wouldn't rust either.

There's this place in Birmingham does each wheel for £20 all in.

  7. Many thanks
is 'steel wheels' a paint ?? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Autotek-AT00STW500-500ml-Steel-Wheel/dp/B005QJWN96/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384186358&sr=8-1&keywords=Steel Wheel paint

My understanding is that powder coating gets a tough finish
Can you get a 'chrome' like finish ?

Sounds like the blasted/steel wheel/laquer may be my best option
(may try some elbow grease and in the meantime and some silver touch up where the chrome has peeled off)
Anyone used/recommend some chrome touch up paint?

writing whilst last post went up - ? worth a trip to Brum??

  8. Yes, they do a chrome like finish, take a look at City Powder Coating, but its best you prepare the wheels yourself, they aren't so good at that.

Whatever you do, get them done properly. They look great on your bus. But don't have them painted white. Personally I think they will look naff on your prime 80's style wheels.

When you mentioned ages ago about possibly selling them I was a tad excited as I'd have had them from you.
