Removing dashboard and/or steering wheel

  1. Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of removing the dashboard?

Basically I'd like to remove mine to do some re-wiring, painting, and general tidying up but I've never done this before so I'm a bit wary.

I know I'm going to need to disconnect the battery, and label all wires before disconnecting etc, but do I need to remove the steering wheel before the dash will come out. If so, is steering wheel removal a right pain in the **se?

Any advice or information very gratefully received :)

  2. do you really need to remove dash ? if you remove the glove box and the instrument binicle then you have access to pretty much everything ! steering wheel is fairly simple to remove

  3. My intention is to paint the actual dash itself, as well as the front bulkhead, but otherwise I would do exactly as you suggested.
Thanks for your reply mate ;)

    It is quite easy.

    • unscrew and disconnect the speedo cable
    • unscrew and ease out the binnacle part way
    • remove and label the binnacle wiring
    • remove and label dash switch wiring (or remove switches)
    • remove the heater leavers
    • if you have a radio in the dash you'll have to disconnect that tooremove glove box inner (one bolt/screw on underside strap)unbolt the cushioned handle trim (6? nuts from the inside of the dash)remove handle trim (be careful not to crack or split it)unfix the dash front from the body 2 screws at either side (doors need to be open) and 2 on the handbrake mechunfix the dash top from near the windscreen (I think 6 or 8 screws)
You should now be able to remove both parts.

whs ^ , be careful when removing the dash , its big and if your vans painted up already it can scratch paintwork when moving it out . ;)

  6. When I created my custom wiring loom, I ensured that the instrument panels and dashboard, could readily be removed as independent units, by using multi-way connector blocks, to connect the loom subsections, for the instruments and switches, to the cab's main wiring loom.

  7. i did my by leaving the clocks in and the wheel on i just took the switches of by unscrewing the nob and metal plates of the front of them and left them hanging untill i was ready to fit it all again ,
sanded it down primed and painted it ;D

  9. Took mine out to paint and would always advise taking lots of pics. It's surprising how easy it is to forget "which side does this washer go?" "How do all these air ducts fit together?"
