Repairing surface rust - advice for an idiot

  1. Right this may sound like a strange request but whats the correct way to repair surface rust on the van. I've a couple of bubbles here and there which will need attention - I have the Kurust, the filler, the wet and dry, the primer and the top coat aerosol. I'm assuming the steps are;

    1) rub down with high grade wet and dry
    2) apply kurust
    3) apply filler - albeit a very small amount to level off
    4) rub down with reducing grades of wet and dry until smooth and flush
    5) apply primer
    6) Another rub down with fine wet and dry?
    7) another coat of primer?
    8) first coast of top coat
    9) rub down
    10) second coat of top coat

Would you then t cut it in?

Its been 27 years since I last did anything last this and at 17, the outcome was not great.

  2. Are you sure its surface rust?

Most bubbles under the paint are actually rot thats started on the rear of the panel and eaten its way through

  3. Yep- had the cards off inside and its all pretty solid there - main areas are the leading bottom edge of my rear hatch, couple of spots round my wheel arches, a couple of patches round the headlights and on my sliding door. All the inside has been waxoyled.

  4. Your correct in the way you described going about it
However put some pics up first so we can take a look

If its only small and minimal you may be able to save yourself some time and effort

  5. thanks paradox - will put some up tomorrow

  6. if it is a 'rust bubble' then ideally you need to go back to bare metal in those areas....Id suggest a wire brush attachment in the end of a drill

get the metal as shiney as you can...and as much of the rust off as you can, then give the area a wipe over (preferably with panel wipe),
    then kurust
once kurust is dried I'd give it another wipe over
then a fine dusting of acid etch primer (UPOL from halfords is fine for this) the etch primer gives a better key for coats on top
then filler etc as you said (but I would keep wiping down with panel wipe between stages)

the better your prep....the better it will turn out

after your 2nd topcoat you could wetsand with a very fine grit paper, or use some G4/T cut type cutting paste

dont go round doing them all at once until you've got your techneque sorted, start with one spot and get that good....and you'll know how to sort the rest

    good luck
