Hi I want to replace the Dynamo while my engine is out. Which alternator kit should I go for its a 1641 engine t2. Is it worth buying a Bosch Alternator and genuine stand and pulleys? Cheers
I would think it's worth the extra, it depends on your budget constraints. Top tip : Check the pulley's are in line.
If you can buy a second hand Bosch unit and alternator pedestal then you will save a fortune, I am not sure those new Bosch alternators are anywhere near the quality they used to be, no doubt Bosch China like everything else. Just buy a new Voltage Reg (internal type - about £14) and you are off- the damn things are tough. Dont forget to buy the fuel pump that is angled to avoid the Alternator case and also the different sized pushrod tube for it - cant rememeber but I think its the shorter one?

Good pointers cheers, Does anyone know which part number I should be looking for the stand 113 101 211E is a dynamo stand by the looks of it. Also if I can find a used alternator are there any recommended refurb companys around? my local auto elec who repaired starters and alt's has closed
Ill pop outside in a min and see if theres a number on my stand for you If a used alternator spins freely on its bearings with no roughness or tight spots in the rotation then normally just replacing the combined internal voltage regulator and brushes aswell as cleaning up the commutator will see it give many miles more service The original bosch ones were really well made
For the replacement voltage regulator, I used WoodAuto - the damn thing was actually MADE IN THE UK!! Good grief I almost fell over when I saw that! Better than the Fleabay version I got before that worked for 12 months and went pop! http://www.woodauto.com/advSearch.aspx
for info, http://members.trainorders.com/android/VW11/ALTvsGEN-STAND.jpg my stand arrived today too pn 113.101.211G
I got a kit from machine 7 not yet used it but its fitted and I need to use a 100 mm rod for the fuel pump so I'm going to cut my one down I think it should work . I do need to wire mine right as I think it may be wrong
