nooo, it's good to know and actually makes sense. rather be safe - we spend a fortune on other stuff and seat belts etc but this is just as important. so pleased you have highlighted it
What engine is yours - I know nowt about type 1 engines (1600s) but would know the difference on a type 4 motor
Lost my internet there for a while. Anyway plan at the moment is to use plumbers matting and aluminium mesh to replace the steel mesh. Had a play and it should work. Mat is good up to 600C assume that will be ok. Interestingly my pattern exchangers have rotted out but the original vw ones are pretty good inside even though the stuff that was there held water. Tried the plumbers mat over the gas hob and it didnt pother it that much so should do the job so using: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_189682_langId_-1_categoryId_165625 and : http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/handtool...amps-soldering/B-and-Q-Soldering-Mat-12389451
Dont be so sure dude I had two four branch mild steel manifolds rot out double time when wrapped in exhaust wrap If they were stainless or driven every day its not so much of a problem If you pop out in your bus to buy a paper and a bottle of milk on a sunday and dont use it again till two weeks later then it holds water and seems to rot stuff out quicker than if it was bare Its fiberglass matting without the resin so heat resistant but great at holding water between the intricate weave
Well- done em. Used ally mesh and plumbers mats (the things you use for soldering). Will post when ive fitted em but done lots of pics so will do a write up! Pics will be usefull for anyone that wants to see whats going on the those majic (or not so majic) boxes that were supposed to get all that lovely heat from. Just painting the first one but lots of de-paint and derusting to do on the case of the other one. Thats a chore - big up to Para for the work hes done on his tinware, its a labour of hate for me tbh!
How long have you had these on your van? I fitted an entire exhaust to a van 4 years ago at it's already completely bolloxed. These T4 bits aren't cheap either, so if yours is ages old will prove to be well worth the effort to keep them going.
Repro exchangers rotted through in 17000 miles / 30 months. Exhaust 1 year or 9500 miles. Interested to hear how they are meant to have insulation inside..mine certainly don't.
The ones Im rejigging are some Ive had for some time. Cant remember whether I bought them 2nd hand or tooke em off an engine. They arent bad at all really. The ones I have on are a bit past it and the covers have gone a bit thin. Been on this engine for at least 7 years and they werent new then. Guess my pushrod tube, heater box lubrication system has some merit! Ive sold a few pairs over the years and wish I hadnt as I never really charge much for owt I sell. The box I replaced earlier this year is still good. (Only took it off as was doing my alternator and fancied fitting the bluebird one). I got it 2nd hand when i was skint a couple of years ago. Will tickle that up at some point and keep for a spare in case. Probably as i dont do that many miles any more! That said its my daily driver now (only temporary)
Think one side is and the other is a Dansk. Cant remember but I havent bought a new one for a good 10 years.
Most of us will have always lived with repro HX's so we may be cold but... Myself I've had buses for 15-20 years but it's only in the last year I've had proper old heat exchangers.
