Rev Limiting Rotor Arm

  1. I'm about to change the current Points Dizzy on the Bay, it eats points regularly apparently (previous owner), so thought it best to fit a new Vac Advanced Electronic Dizzy, however, the old dizzy has a Rev Limiting Rotor Arm.

The engine sounds a little different to Beetles/Buses I've heard before, and pmacs49 suggests it could be a 1641, especially with this rotor arm fitted, anyone any ideas on why someone would fit such a Rotor Arm?

Whats the thinking behind fitting them anyway?

Just trying to learn a bit here, ha.

  2. as the name suggests...it cuts at a specified RPM...the idea being that you prevent pinking/detonation...if you've ever driven a free revving motor with a rev limiter it feels like you hit a wall when you give it too much rice in one gear

  3. Seems its purpose is to make it idiot proof then.

Only rev limiters I've ever experienced were set much higher, around 14,000 on a ZX-6R, and about 6,000 on an Astra GTE.

  4. If fitted, they were to stop folk over-revving the engines. A stock type 1 really isn't happy over 4.5k, as there are no counterweights on the crank.

You can chuck it, tho' (IMHO) - it just adds another potential point of failure.

  5. Interesting, is this 4.5k top end also applicable to type 4 engines?

  6. I have one in the t25 although like snotty says it has more potential to fail[i do agree]but I like to think it has been there from the start so the engine has been in good hands ,it makes no difference to my driving experience...:hattip:

  7. As i said its to stop over revving. usually done by boy racers. or women when they cant get a gear... lol.

I think there maybe have been a rev limiter, there easy to swap out.

I've seen ones that cut out at 4.5 and 5.5

  9. Throw it away and stick with whatever comes with the new dizzy.
They have been known to break up and destroy the innards.
If you're so mechanically unsympathetic that you rev the motor that much, you should sell the Bus!

For the record T4 with it's stronger crank max revs = 5400, but as said above it'll be screaming by then.

  11. Well, the new electronic vac advance dizzy is fitted, and the engine starts and runs, did first time, so now I'll invest in a colortune, and tighten that fan belt...another day...didn't take it for a run, but if its gutless now I'll eat my Deer Stalker...

  12. I can safely claim to have only hit the rev limiter about six times in all the years I have had the bus. (by mistake)
But then I have a tacho. and always change up well below 4,500 RPM.
VW fitted the rev limiter for a good reason.

  13. I'm sure the new electronic dizzy has a rev limiter, most programmable ones can be set to where you want the limit to be, depending on application somewhere between 2k and 10k, as its designed for T1 and T4 engines, I'm sure its probably set at or below 4.5k.

I had one on my type 1 1600 for a while. In every day use it made approximately zero difference.

Which electronic dizzy did you fit? Most won’t have a rev limiter – unless it has a rev limiting rotor arm.

Just seen you have the PowerSpark – that won’t have a rev limiter.

  17. Chuck it, timing can end up all over t shop with them

  18. Well, I never needed a rev limiter before, so if I haven't got one now it's no loss...:(

  19. The rev limiter on a fiat panda is 2nd gear down a steep hill at 40 mph, certainly no more revs after that

  20. They didn't though did they?
    :)

I think the rolling road took mine up to just beyond that and yes, it was screaming
    :)
