Reverse lights

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Gasburner44, Aug 17, 2013.

  1. Hi everyone,
Thinking I'll finally wire up my reverse lights at last but as my coil already has connectors full from pertronix and the usual I'm wondering if its OK to add another connector for the lights.Any other places I can take a feed from or just add a piggy back to the coil?
    Cheers.

I think the +ve is fine to piggyback onto (I'm sure one of the mechs will be along to confirm/deny this), I'm planning to do the same very soon as I've fitted a petronix recently too. Don't make the mistake I did of trying to connect it to the -ve on the coil, I didn't try reverse with the engine running until I got to a petrol station and the engine cut out every time. Took me 5 minutes to realise it was the reverse lights doing it (got some odd looks from other drivers!).

  3. .. make sure you put an in-line fuse in the wire from the +ve side of the coil and the reversing switch, if you are worried about the load its only momentary (unless you are reversing for a coupla miles) and you could always put LED bulbs in the reverse light cluster.

  4. I've piggy backed mine with the carbs on the same coil positive terminal. No problems experienced as yet. :)

  5. ^this (the fuse bit). You need one as the ignition circuit isn't fused. No need to fret over the reversing light load.

I hadn't thought about the load when I added another spade to the coil terminals for the Petronix, but it works absolutely fine.
I've also done the same as James with the feed to the reversing lights, only I discovered it sooner when I was sprawled across our road trying to pull out of the drive, unable to go forwards and every time I selected reverse the engine died. A nice queue of traffic built up and the neighbours had a good laugh before going back to bed after deciding not to get involved whilst I ran round like a loon looking for the wiring diagram. Problem was solved by removing the reversing bulbs and it only later occurred to me that this was all self inflicted by forgetting which terminal the reverse light feed goes to. How I laughed....

  7. Thanks for replies ,I'll get on and sort that.
I'll be careful to connect to the right side of the coil as well!Good anti theft device tho!

  8. You're not first to do that :). Put the reversing light feed on the coil -ve, and you short the contact breakers every time you go into reverse...no sparks. But you know that now ;)... Won't have done any damage.
