Rose jointed accelerator pedal linkage

  1. Hi!

This is more of a recommendation really :)

I have been plagued by a sticking accelerator pedal and 1/2 -2/3 throttle on my '72 van. I had replaced the cable, rebuilt the linkage, replaced the linkage with a new one, an old one etc etc and was still having to use an extra spring and 'lift' the pedal to return to idle.

After trying 'stock' I thought I would try something else...

Having had dellorto carbs in the past I thought I would try some rose-joints...after looking on ebay I realised that I had a stockist of rose-joints not far away. I paid them a visit and they were very helpful and let me have a search around for something to do the job....settling on some M4 joints. A quick trip to B&Q for some suitable hardware including some nylocs and I was all set.

I dismantled the old linkage and welded up the (worn) holes on the back of the pedal and also on the cross bar. Then I drilled them out to accommodate the M4 fittings. I connected the rose joints about half way on their adjustment and bolted everything up. The great thing about this set up is that by adjusting the length of the joint I could fine tune the pedal position.

Once I hit upon the best length I locked it off. I tightened up the pedal hinge and hey presto! I now have a smooth pedal action and full throttle. I was able to put the pedal to the 'stop', the cable midway on the clamp at the carb and use the rose-joints to adjust so I wasn't over stretching the cable etc. I'm guessing that I could have welded up and drilled the holes and replaced the stock linkage and had an improvement - but this is spot on :)

Anyhow - hope this might help someone out!

    Thanks for posting.

  3. Interesting I definitely have the same problem using on 3/4 of the travel for my stock carb so will see what it is like when I get the twins installed.

  4. Very neat. The adjustability is a useful thing to have. :)

  5. In fact there is no need to grease the parts as they are self lubricating with the bronze bush....but I figured it wouldn't do any harm!

  6. Lord Charles...I have fitted Dells in the past and found that some modification is required to get a smooth and full throttle. This mod will certainly help.

  7. Parts ordered, will let you know how I get on.

  8. Hi
Apart from the rose joints, can you list everything else needed please.

  9. Hi Simon,

Male and female rose joint (M4), these screw into each other
1 x M4 nut (to lock the two ends in position)
A couple of M4 nuts, washers and M4 nylocs to secure the two ends.

Welder to weld up the existing holes, I used a copper faced mallet to weld 'against'...this makes plugging holes a breeze!
Grinder (I used a flapdisk) to grind back surfaces flat.

You will need to weld up the holes on the back of the pedal and also on the end of the accelerator linkage. This is on a 1972 van.

A suitable sized drill to redrill the holes to accommodate the new hardware.

    Hope this helps :)

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

    Great idea.
The grease will attract dirt, sand and stuff.

  11. Agreed Zed,

I have since wiped it off :)

  12. Oh, and from memory you need to drill the hole on the 'floor' end off centre. Otherwise the rose joint itself doesn't fit. Its pretty obvious when you offer it all up.

  13. Is there any recent feedback is it ok still?

  14. Still going strong! Absolutely no issues with the mod.

    OrangeVW and paradox like this.
