Running to rich?

  1. Hi

Took the bay out today for its first proper run since we got him ,did not go quiet as hoped ,although the alterations to the gear linkage has made some improvements to the sloppy gears changes, the engine is not running smooth, do the plugs need cleaning or is it running to rich?

It is back firing , and also in third is running very sluggish , loosing power, its ok in 1st and 2nd , any advice pretty please, tomorrow is going to be bay day and time to get down and dirty with the engine, have manual at the ready........

  2. I'd give the thing a good service as a starting point. Tappets, ignition timing, etc...

What Snotty says or you'll be peeing in the wind. 3rd should be what I'd describe as the "best" gear. :)

  4. My thoughts exactly :)

I guess timing/points, but don't skimp: valve gaps first or everything else is a waste of time, then timing, plugs/points. Certainly don't even think of carb fiddling before you've done these.

Depending on how long it's had the fuel in the tank, a good top-up with fresh could be the answer, BUT you must do the service anyway or you could be another blown engine casualty - we've had enough of them recently. :)

  7. excellant , points taken and thank you , the husband type person ,myself and the neighbour are now primed with this information for tomorrow :D

  8. Husband-type person :)? Is he part android?

Seriously, with things you'll never know until you've got a good starting point (which is a basic service). Could be anything. A good going-over will also identify the many parts that are ill-fitted or missing ;)

...and in most instances, the simple service is all that's needed.

  10. a good starting point is what I needed so thank you both, husband type person is called such that in the eyes of the law he is not my husband , even though now considered common law , we had a hand- fasting some 11 years ago try to explain to people when they ask you on forms are you married? yes well in our eyes we are, therefore husband type person was born, although half android does sound pretty darn cool ;)

  11. That sounds horribly complicated, Row. Why not just just refer to him as your "bitch" :)?

  12. don't think he would take to well to that ! :)

Ms. T calls me far worse than that :D

    23 years happily not married.

Back on topic, what the others said, do (or get done) a full service before trying anything else.
