Scrapbox Kitchen....

  1. On ebay a while ago I saw a kitchen box, a well made wooded box with extendable legs for £500 !! Good for awnings et al. I got to thinking whether I wanted a built in kitchen unit in the bus or one which I could leave in the garage until I needed it and could put in the awning rather than cook in the bus.

But, £500!!! So me and my lad decided to do one for free, from scraps and off cuts in the garage.

So, here is the first attempt, initially a tin box that came from Sian's Nan's garage when we cleared it out...[IMG]

Lined the box with a carpet off-cut and plywood left over from lining the kitchen floor. On top is a "worktop" that is used later

Inside the ply is dowelled and compartments made, one for a cooker with space for gas canisters underneath it, one for the legs, 2 saucepans and a frying pan and one for food stuff.

Take the legs out and they fit in ply cut outs under the box

Then the worktop sits on a push fit frame...

A Scrap box kitchen in a box.... and brown to match that van. It not brilliant but it is free and I gain space in the van, which I am going to use as my daily from Nov onwards:):):)

I thought they were called trunks though, not boxes, but very cool whatever you call it!

    Handy

    But bulky:oops:

  7. Won't it tip forward when you put stuff on the stove? And how do you get into the box when the stove is in use?

I do like the idea of it being portable though :)

Great idea but all a bit of a pain having to build it to use for my liking. I'm a screw gas bottle on and cook on the ground type. Sooner I'm fed the happier I am. :D

  9. It works quite well, the lid balances the weight on the front - in fact you can move the cooker back and forward, its not actually as far forward as it looks. The cooker is high enough to get food out of the trunk and the idea is that in the awning the feet can be pegged down, it only takes 30 secs to put up, but I agree it is good to get the kettle on as soon as you stop!!

  10. Great idea- I love it.

  11. 30 seconds is good enough for me :)

  12. nice solution. good to see someone not just chucking money at something designed for the masses which is a compromise on what you actually do want and doing what they want and it also a bit querky and different. Nice one! I like recycled/reborn stuff. Im in the fully fitted camp which has its drawbacks but works for me.

  13. I'm liking that :D love the home made bits people do on here to make their van suit how they want it :)

Had nothing in mine so did this

It's not quite worked out because the gas bottle won't fit on the bottom shelf of the drawer so I may well me re-making it over the winter :)
