Seats for swivel bases?

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by Dave B, Dec 15, 2013.

  1. Other than the factory highbacks, what seats can fit onto the swivel base on the passenger side of a late Westy ('77)? Would Caravelle seats work, with or without armrests? Or the Newton Commercial Suffolk seats?

I'd be grateful for tips from anyone who has got any type of comfortable aftermarket seat on a swivel base. At the moment my van has some earlier lowbacks fitted and the swivel base is missing, so I'm starting from scratch. Ta.

i'm watching this thread, i'm holding off fitting porsche seats 'cosi don't think the swivel will work.

  3. I too will be watching with interest as I have porsche seats fitted but want to put a swivel base on. Oh and sorry to have been no use whatsoever.

Captains chairs out of a T3/T25 Caravelle will fit without any problems.
However, if you have the heater tubes running down the door cards you'll either have to remove them or remove one of the armrests.

  5. Thanks Terrordales, that's helpful. I've managed to secure a pair of Caravelle seats and got the driver's one in (not as easy as it should have been as the previous owner had cut the seat rails off!). The swivel base is also missing, so I need to get a new one in before I try it, but it looks like it should work. I'll try to post photos once it's done.

Most type2 after 73 will fit and most t25 seats will fit. I have no idea if Porsche seats will fit but somehow doubt it unless bolted direct to the plate and I have heard that can foul the swivel.

  9. Well, its taken a while, but I have got the Caravelle seats in. They fit and they are very comfy, as well as having a nice "OEM plus" look and feel to them.

It is very tight against the door panel though - the door has to be opened to swivel the seat and when facing forwards or backwards the armrest is right up against the door panel. When these have both been trimmed I suspect there will be a little bit of rubbing. The door pulls had to be removed as terrordales said above - I will replace then with a simple strap like the earlier doors, mounted either above or below the armrest. So, they work, but only just!

    Photos as promised.

  10. Glad someone has done this. means I dont have to. Couldnt be doing with having to lose bits to make en fit. Will stick with my low back standards I think!

Nonetheless - good work and probably the downs will be more than outweighed by the comfort.

  11. Sorry not the best photo, but these are great, for the extra slam the door gets, because it is tight, they are well worth it (note the strap) image.jpg

  12. That's really helpful to see that - is that pull strap in the stock position? And if so, is it in front of the arm rest when pulled shut?

  13. Hi Dave, as far as I know it's in the stock position and the strap is in front of the armrest
