FREE set of four whitewall tyres in good nick

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by Bertiebot, Feb 28, 2013.

  1. Hi all

I am swapping the tyres on my bus as whilst they are OK I need a higher load rating for my Westy Berlin, especially when weighted down with food, kids, camping gear etc.

I am getting the new boots fitted on Saturday and will have the following available to whoever wants to collect or pay postage to get them.

4 Hercules touring radial p195/75 r14 92t m+s. I am told a bus really needs around a 100 load factor and these are 92. Zed reckons above 90 is OK so they are best suited to a lighter bus. They are on standard steel wheels currently (I am keeping the wheels obviously!)

The tyres have maybe 6k miles on them, have LOADS of tread left and are in perfect nick. The whitewalls aren't as shiny white as when they were new but still look fine.

here is what they look like on my bus currently

Correct me if I'm wrong but you're selling as they don't have a high enough load rating for a bus right?

  7. I will have these if all the above fall through! Im in Sheffield, so I'm able to collect if I get them :)

Calm down dear, I merely asked a question based on your last thread.

    ***** it. Removed by myself.
If people want to run on incorrect tyres then who am I to point it out.
Hope you don't get grief from your insurers if they let you down.

  11. I almost couldn't be bothered to reply to this but here goes. Think what you want about the situation but here is how I see it.

I am very keen that the guy who is getting these is aware of what they are, which is perfect condition lightly used tyres that are not well suited to my van.

They were on it when I bought it from a TLB sponsor. There is nothing at all wrong with the tyres but they won't be suitable for a heavy conversion for the same reason I am replacing them. Not sure how I could be more open about that. That said they could work on a car really easily if they are the right size or maybe a lighter van if the person fitting them was happy to do it. Their choice.

I am still puzzled at getting grief for trying to do someone a favour.

  15. My 10p - yes, grief, - why comment on something that is being given away?

92 Load = 630KG - which is suitable for a Bus. I've seen Zed's thread on prototype bay re. loads which makes interesting reading. Doesn't mean that these (free!) tyres are not suitable for a Bus. I would hazard a guess that there is a large percentage of busses running lower load ratings than this.......

  17. dammit, too late as always, i'd love these for my beetle

  18. Bertie is right these tyres ARE suitable for some if not all Buses. Tyre load rating is shown as the max permissible weight AT REST, forces such as braking and cornering are taken into consideration before determining the load rating of any given tyre and the rating is shown as being used under 'ideal conditions'. (Worth noting that there is a massive safety margin within this calculation but we want to remain LEGAL as well as safe!)

The rear of a T2 being significantly heavier than the front and many if not all buses now modified the end user must take responsibility to determine whether a tyre is suitable (basically put the back of the bus on a weighbridge and divide by two).
VW give the max permissible load on rear axle as 1200kg, and on the front 975kg, divide by 2 for the rear and you get 600kg. This is equivalent to a '90' load rating, therefore '92' IS sufficient but only just.
I run '96' on my Bus and it handles fine. In my experience most light commercials now run '102'.
Whilst '92' is sufficient I agree it would feel squidgy and vague on a fully laden Camper but would be fine on a Van, Bus, Doka or Pick up. Again I re-iterate that it is the end users responsibility to determine whether or not equipment is suitable.
On a personal note, good on ya Bertiebot for sharing the love, I am about to do similar for Ermintrude with some new slats for a 2 bar roof rack (one s/hand but vgc set still left, any takers?) and keep your eye out folks as there's going to be a set of steels with near new tyres (commercial rating!), a Westy Cushion and cover and a pile of other bits going free on here very soon. (no dealers, free to people who NEED them) :D
